One of the simplest to use, but difficult to master, tools to hit the Quake series is the concept of a grappling hook. This "weapon" can save your life, but just as easily bring it to an end. From a strategist's perspective the grapple is an awesome tool. It allows you to reach previously unreachable spots in a map while maintaining a degree of stealth. Yet when in use the cable flying through the air is highly visible. Making you an easy target for anyone who's had a bit of practice with the rail gun.

Before you can go swinging through your favorite level you have to bind the hook to a key. To do this simply follow these simple steps:

Ok, now that you've got your grappling hook bound to a key hop into a skirmish game and give it a whirl.

Some interesting facts about the hook:

  • the hook itself does no damage to other players
  • ... but you can grapple on to someone :)
  • you cannot grapple on to someone during a round countdown (the "3.. 2... 1... Fight!" part)
  • the grapple can be used to open doors, but will not attach to them

Some cool tactics:

  • the grapple combined with the gauntlet can be very deadly combination with practice
  • the grapple fires and pulls just a little too slowly to save you from a fire fight
  • if you see a grapple flying through the air, chances are someone will come flying by pretty soon so pull out your rail gun and let them have it.
