Assim's scoring system is separated into two categories: frags and points. Frags is the number of kills you have made and points are rewards for getting kills. Different game play modes have different ways of rewarding you with points, so go check out the game play sections for info on how to get points.

The score board in Assim looks like this (for non team play modes):

And this is what the team score board looks like:

If you're used to the normal Q3A score board, you'll notice that the "score" column has been moved to the far right and in its place is the "frags" column. The score column is how many points each player currently has while the frags column is their kills.

The indicators in the bottom right hand side of the screen allow you to easily keep track of who's winning. The first place person (or team in these shots) is placed in the slot on the left, and the second place person (or team) goes in the second slot. In team modes the indicators are color shaded to the appropriate team. Whenever your score is displayed in these indicators it is highlighted to let you know that you're winning. The number on the left ("12" in this case) is the goal number that you're playing to. If round scoring is enabled this will represent how many points are needed to win the round and the indicators will display the points of the first and second place players (or teams). But if round scoring is disabled, it will represent the frag limit (if there is any) and the indicators will display the frags of the first and second place team.

But, no matter which display mode is currently active you always want to try and beat everyone else to the number on the left and you want to try and keep that first place indicator highlighted. Heheh.

The "matches" readout tells you how many matches you have won during the current game and the "rounds" readout is how many rounds you've won during the current match.

"Rounds?! Matches!? GAMES?!? HUH!?" hehe. Ok, I'll try to explain this as best as possible. In theory, who ever wins a game should get a huge hunkin trophy. Winning a game is the ultimate goal in match play. A game is comprised of a series of matches. A game is over when a player (or team) has won enough matches that no other player (or team) can "catch up" with them. In layman's terms, if there are 3 matches in a game you have to win 2 matches to win the game.

A match is won by winning a series of rounds in the same manner as winning a game -- meaning if there were 3 rounds in a match you have to win 2 rounds to win a match. Winning a round is where it gets interesting :)

So.. how do you win a round then? Well, time to confuse you some more: it will vary from server to server. Some servers will have a round score limit set and to win a round you will have to earn that many points. Other servers won't have a round score limit set (which effectively removes the round system for DM, Team DM, CTF, and Tournament modes) which is useful when playing in Assim, Elim, or Pickups modes. If you're on a server with the round score limit disabled and you're playing one those three modes, then the rounds will "logically" advance. Meaning that when one team is left in Assim, that team wins the round. When one person is left in Elim, that person wins the round. And when one team is left alive in Pickups, that team wins the round.

Once a round is over, all players' (or teams') points are reset to zero. Your frags are the only thing will remain throughout a particular level. And at the end of the level, no matter what game play mode you were playing, players are ranked by the frags they earned -- so you can't rely on your team mates' skills to rank highly in the score board.

Phew. Now you know all that there is to know about the rounds system... right? Nope, there's just one more bit of information that I need to mention. If there isn't any way you could win current match (meaning you couldn't win enough rounds to catch the first place team/player), you will be eliminated until that match is over. If there isn't any way for you to win the game, you will be eliminated for the remainder of the current game.

With this in mind, Assim2 is the ultimate mod for running large tournaments consisting of many players and/or teams. Eventually only two players/teams will remain left in the game and they will have to battle it out to determine the overall winner.

The easiest way to take this all in is to fire up the good old skirmish mode and kick some bot ass and see if you have what it takes to win a game. For learning purposes I suggest you start a game (in the mode of your choice) with a round score limit of 5 - 10, to keep rounds short, and that you play with 3 rounds and 3 matches. After that I'm sure you'll have a good idea of how things work.

I personally play with rounds set to 9 and matches set to 0 (which gives you infinite matches in a game) and a time limit of like 15 - 30 minutes.

Here are a "few" screen shots of the rounds system in action, because a picture is often worth a thousand words:

Blue owns :)

what? you wanna piece of this?

Everyone with black shading has been eliminated... damn bots!

Ranger just won a face off with Sorlag and Wrack for the match

Ranger won that match, but its gonna take one more to win the game.

But Sorlag comes back strong during the next match

Sorlag is too good at this.

Still on the first match, I can still win!

Damn, I got eliminated :(

Time for a little gauntlet intermission battle :)

ahhh yea : )
