Can it be true? Risen from the dead? It's been a long and interesting five years. Please visit Awakening 2 if you haven't already. Musashi and others have done a great job of revitalizing the mod. Because of numerous requests over the years, I've finally put up the original Awakening source code. Enjoy.

It's been a long, good run.

I have gotten a few emails asking why Awaken news has dropped off the face of the planet. This is simply because I've moved to California, and have started working on 007 The World Is Not Enough for Electronic Arts. I also haven't moved into my permanent apartment yet, so I don't have my computer or any of my things. This is why Awaken version 2 hasn't been released. Sorry to keep you all waiting. I will be releasing it as soon as I get moved in and have my computer set up. More updates to come...

Sorry there hasn't been an update lately. We're unfortunately still waiting for the male player model to be finished.

I am happy to announce that I have accepted a level design position at Electronic Arts! I'm getting ready to move to sunny Redwood City, California! I'd like to thank everyone who helped to make Awakening a fun game addon. You guys are great and I couldn't have done it without you!

Come kick my ass.

Since I was going to provide the Awakening single player levels as a separate download anyway, I've decided to release them a bit earlier than the actual release #2. You can now download the Awakening SP levels! Let me know what you think!

Here's some screenshots of the new level I did for release 2. Along with Ned's level that will make 2 new DM levels for the 2nd release. There are also 2 SP levels as well.

Anyway, here's the screens...

What's the word? Well release 2 is very close to completion. And to make that as smooth as possible I need to ask a favor. Any of you out there with the capabilities to host a server want to be involved in a playtesting session for release 2? I'm also looking to get a good number of people to test it, so if anyone is interested email me!

I've gotten a couple really good submissions for the skinning contest! But I'd like to see a lot more!

Not much else going on. Still waiting on some of the weapon models for Awaken release 2. Sorry guys, I hate waiting as much as you do. This is one of the problems of running a mod team over the net. Everybody has real lives and nobody is getting paid so I guess we all have to wait as long as it takes. :-(

If there are any programmers out there with experience in graphics/engine programming please email me. Or if you know any have them email me. I might have a fun little project to work on for anyone who feels up to the challenge. No, it's not a mod, and it's not a full game. Something just as cool though. :-)

We have a number of people offering us PPMs to use for release 2. The problem is, we need some skins! MassiveB has set up a skinning contest page! It takes a good artist to make that crappy Q2 palette look good, so we'd like to see what kind of skills you've all got! You can submit as many entries as you'd like, and for as many of the PPMs as you want. Go check out MassiveB's Awakening release 2 skinning contest page!

It's the big 2000. And many of you are probably wondering "Where the hell is Awakening release 2!?" Well here's the deal: In the last update I posted an extra screenshot. That's from a single player mission I'm working on. For those of you that design levels you know that this stuff can take a very long time. I'm whittling away at so don't worry, it will be here soon! I know you want to play release 2 and thanks for all the emails. Just hold on a little while longer. It will be worth it for the SP fans out there.

Well it's been a while since an update and I apologize for that. We've all been busy doing various things, one of them of course being Awakening release 2. Here's what it breaks down to: We've got a few new maps, 2 new weapons, vweps... and hopefully a PPM but I'm not quite sure on that (*cough* you know who you are). ;-)

I've got some screenshots here of some of the new maps and weapons as well. Click to enlarge. What you see directly below is one of my new levels and in the player's hands there is a nifty chainsaw! In the other shot we have the disc gun, which shoots bouncy thermal metal discs kinda like in that old cool movie Tron.

We also have the talented Ned adding a map to Awakening! Check these screens out:

Do those screenshots look great or what? Go download Ned's other Q2 DM maps at Ned's World!

And here's a little suprise teaser for you:

What do you suppose that screenshot is from?

In other news, I've been playing a lot of Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament. Both are excellent games and if you've got the spare cash, I highly recommend getting both. For classic fast paced DM Q3 kicks! And for refreshing new styles of play UT is really great!

On this subject some of the Awakening team and I have been discussing a possible Q3A version of Awakening. Making a DM conversion is a lot of work and something not to be taken lightly. Are any of you playing Q3A? Do you think Awakening would make a great Q3A mod? I really want to know what kind of interest there is in this, so all of you Awakening players please email me with your thoughts on Awakening Q3!

That's all for now! Awakening release 2 will be out very soon now! Just sit tight!

The Linux port of Awakening is finally here! A big thanks to Richard Hess for doing this! You can get it at HERE! Hopefully this will increase the number of servers out there!

I added some new shots in the screenshots section. They are below the shots of the levels. These new ones are of action taking place on PlanetQuake's Awakening server!

In other news we've got few of the new secondary firing modes implemented for weapons that didn't have them. We also have one new weapon completed. Of course, you won't be able to see these things until release 2 (tease). But don't worry, we're busting our butts to bring it to you all in due time. :-)

There is no longer a requiem server up. Requiem couldn't keep his server running any longer but I want to thank him for keeping it up as long as he did! We're now down to only the PQ server. Anyone out there who knows anyone with the capabilities to run a server please ask them to run Awakening! We're also looking for someone to do a Linux port so that there can be more servers out there.

Release 2 is well in the works. I don't have an estimate as to when this will be out. Hopefully before Q3. ;-)

There are now BeOS and Irix ports for Awakening! Kudos to Richard Hess for doing these!

The BeOS port is here!

And the Irix port is here!

Many of you have emailed asking why the sky in the Awakening maps looks bad. First of all, if you are running the game in software mode the sky WILL look bad. There is nothing that can be done about this. Software mode will never be beautiful. Second if you are running the game using a decent 3D card you need to disable 8-bit textures in the Quake 2 video menu. When the sky is 8-bit, it is guaranteed to look like garbage. So you need to disable 8-bit textures in the Quake 2 video menu for the sky to look good. I will be posting a Frequently Asked Questions page soon.

We have started working on Awakening release 2. There are lots of cool new things we're putting into this and I think you will all be pleasantly suprised. :-)

October 22nd, 1999

Updating to let you all know there is a PlanetQuake server at the address listed above. I will be listing the main servers here for easy access to all you rabid Awakening players. :-)

The mod is a success and I'd like to thank you all for playing. In order to increase the number of servers running Awakening we are looking for someone to possibly do a Linux port and maybe some ports to other systems as well. We are also looking for someone to add single-player deathmatch bot opponents. If you or anyone you know might be interested please email me.

Just posting to let you all know that there is a readme text file update which fixes some corrections and gives better descriptions of the weapons and items. Included is an Awakening GameSpy tab. At the time I made the tab, there were no servers running Awakening. Let's get more servers! If you know someone running a Q2 server, tell them to try Awakening! You can get the readme text file update and GameSpy tab HERE!

I have also opened an IRC channel #awaken on EFnet.

Stay tuned...

It turns out my host for redchurch.com couldn't handle the amount of traffic that Awakening was generating, so here I am at PlanetQuake. I'd like to thank the PQ staff for working so quickly to get me up and running! I'm trying to get more game servers up running the mod, and I'll post the addresses as I get them. We still have a server running at 63.192.165.71 again thanks to Requiem. What do you all think of Awakening? Email me!

October 17th, 1999 Update #2

It seems my host is getting crushed! If you need an alternate download for Awakening, there is one at http://www.minecore.com/awaken.zip

Thereis also a server up at 63.192.165.71

MUCHO thanks to Requiem for that! You rock! Everybody go visit Requiem's site at http://www.minecore.com/requiem/ and email him and tell him how cool he is for hosting files and a game server. ;-)

Well the big day is finally here. You can now download the Awakening Quake 2 partial conversion. We've spent a long time working hard on this project and now it's ready for you to play! Go get it in the downloads section!

This is release 1. There will be a release 2 which will have a ppm, vwep support, and maybe some new maps as well. I have some other things planned also. Keep checking here for news!
