The Evils of Camping?
Just toss a grenade at me and shut up.

It's been my experience that Quake players love to complain. What do they complain about? Well, almost anything they possibly can. The guy with the rocket launcher complains about the "quadwhore." The guy with quad damage complains about the "bfg lamer." The guy with the bfg complains about the "low-ping bastard." And the guy with 20 ping complains about the lack of colored lighting in the map, in which case guys like me without 3d cards who have only seen it on the back of the box end up rolling on the floor laughing. It's almost enough to make one desire a server variable like "no talking." So, all these people who think they're id Software go around making up their little rules like "no one can use the bfg when I play" and I pretty much ignore them and go on killing (or at least trying to kill) people however I think I can. Now, one can imagine that someone with an attitude like mine must get yelled at an awful lot, and I do. And the one issue that seems to come up more often than any other is "camping."

Recently, I got back into playing Action Quake 2. For those unfamiliar with this mod, one can die even quicker while playing it than with normal Quake 2. Picture this teamplay scenario: Two teams spawn in at opposite sides of a city, and then race towards each other only to meet in a large, open, center area and shoot each other in the head. Most rounds last a little over a minute and the last guy standing wins it for his team. I, of course, am almost always the first one down; usually by the time I spot the guy who's shooting at me, I'm already dead. Now, if a lab mouse in a maze gets a little electric shock each time he goes down a certain path, eventually he'll start trying different routes. So when the fifth or sixth round starts, instead of following everyone else, I switch guns and run back inside one of those buildings that no one else ever bothers to go into. This time, when that last guy goes searching for me and thoughtlessly charges straight into the middle of the room, I blow the back of his hollow head off with my handcannon, winning the round for my team. How can this be a bad thing? But instead of hearing something along the lines of "nice kill, Fiend" all I get is "why don't you stop camping like a wuss and play?"

I'm not an excellent player. My ping averages about 400, and that's on a good day and if I find just the right server; I constantly find myself with the inability to fire at my opponent until I've respawned with the crappy lightblaster. On a second note, I'm not sure when people stopped using the keyboard to play games, but I somehow got left out of it and I still play like crap whenever I try using the mouse; I still play Quake 2 pretty much the same way I used to play Doom, even though my "ctrl" key pops off whenever I get really mad. I suck with the rocket launcher, I really suck with the railgun, and "strafe jumping" seems to involve a key combination that breaks Quake 2 and returns me to windows. Bear with me here, I'm building up to a point. I imagine that most players have their own list of little unique problems like these that they face during a game, and frankly I don't think it's unfair of someone to take any advantage they can if they get a frag for their trouble.

I think it's amusing how when someone hides in the shadows with the grenade launcher or the double-barreled shotgun, it's bad, but as soon as someone's up on a ledge with the railgun, it's perfectly ok because then it's called "sniping." There are a lot of things that annoy me in the world of Quake. For example, the incredible overuse of the rocket launcher (a gun that in real life would probably blow up an entire building and be difficult to even lift) or guys that say stuff like "I'm gonna open up a can and lay down the smack with my leet skillz," when what he really means is "I'm gonna kill you," but I know that no amount of complaining on my part will be able to change any of that. Sometimes we just have to shut up and have fun.
