Capture The ZZzz..
CTF dominance in FPS games
  — by Tikki

Although the dominance of CTF over other mods has been obvious for a long time, I only truly realized CTF's dominance recently, while looking for a good Defend & Destroy server to play Tribes.

I noticed the following while searching for a server: on every page of servers there was an average of 3-5 non-CTF servers, CTF servers generally had higher pings then other servers, and most of the CTF servers were currently active, while the Capture & Hold and other servers were relatively inactive. What are the majority of clans for? CTF.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

Why don't people make non-CTF mods? For the most part this has been that they're lazy sons of bitches who can't think up something original or don't want to waste the time having to create a whole new mod. It's much easier for them to simply make a variant of an existing mod.

Every new twist on CTF was "new and innovating," in my opinion the very fact that a mod is a CTF-variant makes it unoriginal. Unless someone just makes an incredibly twisted, strange variant on CTF, people are just copying Threewave and id's work (not to mention some great server-side CTF mods). Already, most of the Half-Life mods in development are CTF mods. The first mods for a game are always CTF now.

This has been pissing me off for quite a while, and ever since Action Quake2 came out, I've vehemently avoided CTF. Since experiencing Action Quake2 I realized that CTF was so dominant because people weren't being very innovative.

Same old same old

Now please, understand me, CTF is a great mod that is very addictive, but come on, if you're gonna make a mod, do something new. If you do something CTF oriented, I don't think you can really call it all your own work. Loki's Minions CTF would probably argue with me that all their stuff is original, but if you get down to the basics this is it - two teams, two flags, two bases, the teams try and get the other team's flag and take it to their base.

The reason I loved Action Quake2 was the fact that it was addictive, exciting, and something completly new. In Tribes, the reason I love D&D and C&H is because of the new experience, having to learn new strategies to complete my objectives.

In CTF it's just "I go get the flag and run the hell back to base". In D&D it's "Me and my teammates will work together to destory that damn rocket turret". In CTF it's all about me, me, me. In more team oriented games, like Tribes, it's about US and WE and oh damn OUR generator just got blown to hell.

I think that some people continue playing CTF because they've gotten so used to it that they suck at anything else. I just hope that everybody wakes up from the daze they've been in and realize that there are better things to play then CTF.
