Breaking The Cycle
A newbie's view of the community
  — by WizardMan

It's Christmas 1998, and in front of me lies a box, obviously a computer game, and I know it's Quake II. I rip off the wrapping paper, and I know that I will have so much fun playing Quake II multiplayer.

Yeah, I'll get killed for a while, but I'll get better. Not to mention the kickass single player mode. Yeah, watch out Quake II community.

Reality Bites

But, as I enter my first game I realize the reality is quite different. I enter my first game, but I can't move and I see a wierd modem outlet icon at the top of the screen. What the hell is going on?

I'm killed 5 times because of this, then I realize it could be that cryptic lag that I read about. But how can this be? My modem is incredibly fast. I decide it is AOL's fault.

But I recover. I get my first frag, then I get my first double digit frag game, and everyone looks like it will be ok. But then back at MPlayer lobby I find the biggest disappointment of them all. I comment on how tough that was, and expect, while not sympathy, at least a polite "I don't care" type of thing.

But no. What I get is this : "HA HA! God damn f**** newbie! F***** jackass! We kicked you f***** ass!"

I am deeply offended at this. But I console myself. Just an isolated case I say to myself. After a short break I come back for another game and ask a few questions in the lobby. The same reply. I don't get it.

Why?

This is the type of etiquette that us newbies get seemingly everyday, from experienced people who either never learned manners or are just plain jerks.

We wonder why. Is everyone in the Q2 community like this? They were all newbies at one time, and they probably had to put up with the same abuses we have to now.

So why do they feel the need to curse at every oppurtunity even if there isn't a reason? Why do they feel the need to constantly deride the newbie when he gets killed? Why does no one ever come to the support of the newbie?

I would love to be able to say that these are the actions of only a small faction of Quakers, and that the vast majority are kind and helpful. Unfortuneatly the sad truth is the kind and helpful Quakers are the small faction and the jerks are the vast majority.

The Consequences

Perhaps they just don't realize the consequences of there actions. A large number of newbies just walk away after this baptism by fire, and they are completely justified. No one should have to put up with this crap.

But some of us struggle onward, and we get good. We get real good. Because we know the best way to get back at them is to kick there butts. But we get cynical. We expect the treatment, and we accept it as the only way. So when we become experienced we treat newbies that way. It is a vicious cycle that must be broken.

There is one way, and one way only. If you are one of the jerks, and you are reading, treat the newbies better. You obviously love Quake II, so stop giving it a bad reputation by your actions.

If you treat us well then others will, then we will not become cynical and e won't treat the next wave of newbies badly, and then we have a new cycle, a glorious cycle of harmony so that we can slaughter each other in a more civilized manner.

Please, for the next generation!
