Quake III : Arena Demo
id Software released the Q3:A demo test late last night. Unable to contain the excitement, PlanetQuake sent Pappy R and shaithis into the fray to crack open that bad boy and take a look at what's new inside.

If a gigantic mouth with fangs doesn't send a shiver up your spine, then maybe you ought to go back to playing Pokemon.

The New Map!

Quake fans are treated to a brand new map in the demo release - q3dm1. You gotta love a map that features a gigantic fanged mouth that looks disturbingly real. The tongue alone gets several points in the gross-out department. The look and feel of this level reminds me a lot of Quake 1 - lots of dark, spooky shadows and a completely gothic feel; definitely different from the space-themed Quake 2. Although if this reminds me of Quake 1, it's Quake 1 on some serious hormones.

It looks like the entrance to the church I went to as a kid. Dark, spooky, and that stained glass thing on top...yeah, that's about right.

As yours truly hasn't played the demo yet (GASP! Calm down, it's only been out for an hour, and I'm writing this over an awful dial-up connection), I can't tell you anything about the size of the map. But the textures look wicked, and they definitely are a far cry from the maps we've seen in the previous versions of the test. One of the main features of q3dm1 is that it's designed to appeal to newbies - there's no vertical transitions, so it's a pretty easy map to navigate.

"Worship me! It's either that or you get a rocket in the orifice of your choice. Your decision."

The one thing that really sticks out about q3dm1 is the level of artistry in the maps; I don't recall seeing this level of artistic detail in either of the previous versions of Quake. The level designers must have gone whole hog here, and we players reap the benefits of their obvious artistic talent.

Next up - the models!
