Gaming and Violence
- By Dru

I have waited until now before sitting down to write this. I have done this for several reasons. One is because I wanted to wait and see if anyone else wrote what I was thinking. I did not see any articles conveying my opinions, although I am not saying there were none. Also, I can sit down now and write this without turning it into an attack on the media, even though I do have to include my opinion on them.

In the light of violent events which have recently occurred involving "young" (I personally did not consider several the offenders young) people and firearms the media has turned around, singled out "violent" games such as "Quake" and blatantly attacked them for corrupting "young people". I have sat in my bedroom and watched American Politicians say the same - That games such as "Quake" are EVIL and are CORRUPTING our youth.

What I don't understand is how this can be? The reason those kids became violent could be blamed on bad parenting, violent films, dark emotional music or even watching cartons as children.

I think the real reason is that they were just plain loonies.

In some ways, "Quake" is the universal equalizer. I'm a 19-year-old white male. I can connect to a server running "Quake 3 Arena", for example. While on there, I have no idea who the people I am playing against are. For all I know, I could be the only white guy on there. I could be the oldest or youngest player. I could be the only male player. I can guarantee you however, that if you connected to a server, you would not hear a single racist joke, or chauvinist remark, or any similar sort of insult. I can also guarantee to you that if you were to make such a remark you would not be made at all welcome. 15 year olds and 30 year olds beat me regularly.

What this proves is that there is a real tolerance present amongst the "Quake society" - Far more tolerance than has been shown than the generation older than us, who propel us into conflicts against the new enemy Communism, or the new enemy Iraq, or who managed to divide a whole country for many, many years.

Maybe the generation slandering "Quake" aught to sit down and actually take a lesson from us?

Maybe id Software should be commended for making a game that anybody can play and enjoy, while simultaneously eliminating all forms of racism and the like.

It is so ironic that a Politician - a member of a group of people not exactly world-renowned for being honest and open - could actually stand up and talk so much smack on a subject he has no idea about. In my opinion the "honourable gentleman" is a complete fool.

Before he started his speech you could hear the thump of him jumping on the bandwagon, being driven along a winding road by the blind driver known also as the Media.

The same Media who take great pleasure in screwing up peoples lives for "a story". Yeah, great guys - You're really the people I want to have my kids looking up to as they mature.

I'm going to leave it there - My neighbours dog is barking so after a few hours deathmatch I'm going to grab a shotgun and blow its brains out, reliving the experience from the first level of the first episode of "Quake".

Give me a break.
