Big Fuzzy Focus: Arena_World

Awe yeah baby, chaingun.

You're all about to get a taste of a fresh new mod for the Quake III scene, and it goes by the ominous name of Arena_World. It's pretty damned hard to find anything totally new in the mod scene now, from class based team play to the instant gratification of weapon tweaking projects, but Arena_World aims to combine things you know into something fresh.

The first thing you're going to notice when cranking this bad boy up are the maps, and that's all part of the charm and game play. The levels are made up of two identical sides, separated by a light beam straight down the middle called a "Beamer". This and the layout of the arena are your boundaries, and bear a striking resemblance to what soccer field from hell would/should look like and if you've played soccer in hell, then back me up here. The "Beamer" I mentioned is not just a pretty light, but a sweet little device that makes sure you or your team stays on your side of the yard. Now that you're nicely separated from those that wish to do you harm, you have but one option and that's to take them out before they take you out.

In the first available version to hit the public, there are five Arena's to do battle in, and they get better with every rung up the numeric ladder for looks, playability and tricky little options. We've got a whole page of level shots coming up, so hold tight for a bit and you'll get to check them all out for yourself. The levels also vary not only in quality, but in size, which makes some not very much fun for a 1 on 1 battle, but a true hoot for teams. Team play is where this bird really flies in my opinion, but we'll get to that soon enough as well. Maps aren't the only thing to bring the smell of freshness to the project because the team has added two new weapons and some tweaks to the mix that really make the gameplay what it is, a pure rush!

When you spawn into Arena_World you'll see there's nothing to pick up and replenish your health, armour or ammo, but like other mods that have come before, that's just fine. As a matter of fact it just wouldn't work if you didn't show up fully stocked and ready to rumble. You've got all the stuff you'll need and all you're gonna get, so use it wisely my friend. The two new weapons you'll be given are the Chain Gun and Chainsaw, and I was unsure of these choices when I first cranked up the mod. First off, I've been a "Chain Gun 'Ho" since Quake 2 and figured this was just going to be too damned easy now that I was spawned in packing a fully loaded lead hose. I was wrong. Sure this automated meat grinder puts out the pepper at an enjoyably high rate, but as your distance grows between you and your target, the weapon really spreads the love out to an almost useless degree. That, is another good thing. You won't be hosing down the other side of the arena with your lead, and at the most distant points from end to end, the weapon is merely an inconvenience to your foe. It does make one dandy mid-range toy though, so watch it.

Gimmie some meat!

The other new weapon, the Chainsaw was the stupidest thing I ever heard of...for a minute. Why would they put a melee weapon into a mod where you can't touch your enemy? Well this little hummer is a laugh and a half, because it's primary use as far as I could se was to bump and throw your teammates around and into things. Did I mention bouncing around like a pinball was a big feature for Arena_World yet? No? Well it sure as hell is!

You're born into these all enclosed arenas with no team damage, no falling damage and no self damage, and I hope you're all thinking what I was thinking...Rocket Jumps! Oh baby it's jump jack city and you'll be airborne so often you'll wish you took that pilot training course at the little airport down the road. Rocket jumps vertical and horizontal are the prescription here as you jump up to a wall and fire off a rail before switching back to the RL for a blast off the wall to place you firmly on the other side of your territory. Please excuse the pun, but what a blast! The RL is also tweaked with faster rockets, not insanely fast rockets, but faster that's for sure.

Another little anti-spam twist is the Plasma Gun. You can't just hose down the enemy are and expect massive results since the balls have been hit with a dissipation tweak, meaning the further they go, the less powerful they are. Can you imagine a mod that is so chaotic that they had to tone down the weapons? Boom baby, that's juice.

So we've got the new maps, which are the bread in the Arena_World sandwich, and the weapons and tweaks for the butter and dab of jam to make it a tasty treat. This one is pure fun and has the learning curve of a stick. I can see this one sparking up it's own ladder in no time, so get into it now to make your mark on the coming Arena_World community. Future versions will also have more features, game modes and fun than this one, so buckle up and get ready.
