Big Fuzzy Focus: Evolution Eve - Clan Arena
Pappy-R takes a long look at the Evolution Eve - Clan Arena mod for Quake 3: Arena complete with screenshots.
  — by Pappy-R

This is a good way to start!

A little while ago we, just three days ago actually, a new site appeared here on PQ called Evolution Eve - Clan Arena and they're getting ready for their very first Quake III mod beta release. That means we had time to get to know the project a bit through some help from the project lead, v|o'dium. As always when we focus on a new project, we'll have some pics for you showing what you can expect, but I guess we should yap a bit on what the mod plans to offer Q3A players.

Evolution Eve - Clan Arena is aimed directly at two areas for Quakers; Clan Matches and fun. Setting up clan matches will be easier than ever before as more and more of the proposed features make it into future releases, features like game options, menu systems and new predefined commands. The fun is coming in by way of some very cool new features and gameplay modes that we'll be taking a look at in more detail right here. Remember this first release is a beta, so all the goods you'll find listed on the Evolution Eve - Clan Arena pages won't be included just yet, but the beta will bring enough to make a difference and be well worth trying out to help the crew test the murky waters of the Q3A mod making pool. The v0.01 *BETA* will be released tomorrow, Friday the 27th if all goes according to plan, and I for one plan on giving this a real whirl. Now let's take a look at what we'll see in the first kick at the can.

Features

Right off the bat we'll all be able to lay the smack down in two new gameplay modes, Survival and Team Survival. The basics of survival play is, just like it sounds, to last longer than anyone else. Yes of course this isn't brand new, hardly anything is anymore, but it's how things are done that make or breaks a project and the EECA guys seem to want this to go down with a loud boom. In Survival, you frag and don't get fragged to win; ya see there's no coming back from the splat this time. You die...you die grasshopper, and the winner grabs 10 points. In Team Survival, the same rules apply and not only would your team win the round, but they the point. Yes I said the point, so there's going to be some heat going on over low scoring matches. Now as I said there's nothing earth shaking in this so far, but this isn't where the beta will shine in my books, although I do love this style of play.

A friend joins the fun!

In the first version you'll be able to have re-namable teams in Teamplay and the ability to use non-red and blue team skins! Getting your attention with the details now aren't I? Hold on there pal, try animated names like those lucky Dreamcast players got! Yeah baby, groovy eye-candy is always fun, and this is going to open up even more options with later releases, but before I go off on those let's get back to what we will be getting tomorrow. There's also two new awards in the mix and one is going to become my favourite, if I can actually win the damn thing. That would be the Rocket to Air award that you'll receive for fragging some poor smear with a rocket while he's in the air. Yeah baby, not only are you down and out, but I think I saw your liver enter the next level in the rotation! Sorry about that, I really wanna see that one pop up. The other new award is the Most Impressive and you'll win this little cupie doll by banging a player 6 time with a rail. Kind of a condensed version of the original "Impressive" but that just means it'll be harder to achieve.

Well that's almost it, except for some graphical goodies that will make appearances in the mod, and you'll see things like the new menu, although it won't hold all the goodies it will down the road. New Team Spawn graphics will be present which will make it a bit easier to tell who is spawning in if you only see it out of the corner of your eye. I can see this as a deciding factor in whether I stay or go in a very close fight with a foe. Well do yourselves a favour and head over to the Evolution Eve - Clan Arena site for more of what they plan to bring us in time as they get more accomplished, but before you take off, check out the screenshot section we have for you to get a good idea of what you'll be seeing tomorrow.

Next, more cool screenshots to wet your whistle.
