Big Fuzzy Focus: The Dark Conjunction
Single-player goodness!

Single player action in Quake III. Eat it up!

Monsters on parade!

The Dark Conjunction will be sending out it's first public beta shortly after you read this, if it hasn't gone public already, and this marks a big day in Quake III development. No other single player project has released anything to this point, and there's not a large crowd of these things in the works to begin with. The reasoning, it's a monumental task compared to modding Quake III to a multiplayer game, since the game was multiplayer out of the box. Taking on the task of a story, AI coded monsters and Non Player Characters (NPC) is a tall order, but one The Dark Conjunction has been hammering away at for some time. So now we all get a peek into the dark, here's some of what I saw.

This release is beta. Pure, raw beta. Not an almost complete but missing a few features beta, I mean beta! Testing is the order of the day, so expect to find small imperfections and the like, but the release is playable. Hell it's actually enjoyable with the thought and care the team has already put into place. This version packs the game intro and three levels of pure involving monster bashing fun into a neat little package, and it sure has it's moments. The Ace Team threw in some very nice plot stimulating perks that make the world feel alive, even if there's not something in front of you to blast. Kind like a movie, but you know you may have to pay for it later when something you saw or heard may in fact be looking for you.

All in all I really think this TC shows promise, quite a lot actually and it could easily develop into something everyone will take a crack at. The whole thing had an odd feeling of being in a pulp fiction horror short, which is by no means a bad thing. Some of the best terror filled moments waited between those grainy pages, and now you can taste them in the world we'll all knowingly call the "TDC".

Now is the part of the show when we slide our ten questions off to the dev team to see what makes the project tick. Gentlemen...

Interview

Pappy: Tell us a bit about the project. (What kind of project it is and the changes it makes to the game)

Carlos: The Dark Conjunction is a true single player total conversion. For the mod we have created real NPCs (non-playable-characters) instead of using standard Q3 computer controlled bots. We have changed mostly everything so that the game works well as a single player experience. We have tried to add a strong focus on telling a story, and though not much is revealed in this first beta, it shows the potential of what we can accomplish. As the mod continues to grow, more of the story will be revealed, expanding TDC's universe.

Pappy: Have you been encouraged by the Betas you've released or Alphas you've tested under a closed atmosphere?

Andres: So far all the development of the project has been tested in a very closed atmosphere and all the feedback we get is from our own team members and some beta testing. We are very excited with what we've accomplished and every time a task is overcome we feel encouraged in making this mod bigger and better. Before Beta 0.9 there was no point in releasing other betas because there would be no solid single player structure. We wanted to have a lot of work done before we released our first beta to the community.
