Generations
Five Generations - One Eternal Combat
by Lee'Mon
The
following is the opening chapter from the story "Generations"
by our own Lee'Mon. The story, unveiled in parts, attempts
to expand on Quake III Arena's story by explaining the origins
of many of the characters, as well as how they found their
way into the Arena Eternal.
The story will be unveiled here at PlanetQuake, one chapter
per week. The end of the story presents a special epilogue
that takes the story beyond Quake III Arena, and into Generations
Arena, a project by WireHead Studios.
Regardless, the story presents an excellent glimpse into the
Q3A universe. So sit back, and enjoy the tale!
Five Generations - One Eternal Combat
Part I: The Earth Soldiers
Chapter
1
Epoch: World War II
Location: Unknown Nazi Fortress
Sergeant William J. Blaze rested up against a wall and took
a breather. He'd always harbored a decided hatred for the
Nazis, even before they had captured him behind enemy lines
and locked him up, never again to see the light of day. Fortunately
for him, he was able to overpower his guard, take the guard's
knife and pistol, and work his way through the castle in an
attempt to break free.
The sights he had seen, however, were unlike anything he could
have possibly been prepared for. The Nazis had secretly been
performing experiments - evil, cruel, and unusual experiments
- in an attempt to reanimate dead flesh. Their hope, somehow,
was to create an army of undead warriors to help them conquer
the world.
Sgt. Blaze had seen the results. The first "experiment" he
had come across was a gigantic brute with gatling guns attached
where his arms were supposed to be. It had taken every ounce
of firepower the Sarge had to destroy him, especially considering
the bastard was decked out in more armor plating than the
average tank.
After that monstrosity, the "experiments" only got more and
more gruesome. Sarge had come across Frankenstein creations,
with knives for arms and guns in their chests. They were almost
as much trouble from a distance as they were up close. As
he killed monster after monster, his hatred for the Nazis
and what they had done grew larger and larger. He became determined
not only to escape, but to take down the Nazis once and for
all.
He was getting close. As he approached the innermost areas
of the fortress, he could sense that he was approaching the
Fuerher himself. And, perhaps, he was approaching the secrets
that resulted in the creatures he faced.
He hoisted up his gat. He had gotten enough rest; it was time
to move on. Before he could step forward, however, he heard
a noise off to his right. Sarge paused, then furrowed his
brow. Someone was in the room just ahead...
Inside a research lab within the Nazi fortress, a woman searched
through the papers on a desk. Her sleek and seductive body,
only partially hidden by a military uniform, seemed to display
a certain lethality. Part viper, part black widow, she was
fully capable of removing those that would oppose her.
Now, however, she had what she was looking for. She removed
one of the documents from the table and examined it. As her
eyes scanned the German text, she knew she had struck gold.
The stealthy assassin known only as "the Mynx" was on an assignment
for information... profitable information. The Nazis had been
performing experiments with cellular reanimation. While sneaking
her way into the fortress, he had seen some of the zombie
abominations that had been created as a result. According
to rumors, however, the Nazis had also been working on a formula
to prolong the life and regenerative properties of living
cells. Her client would pay handsomely for that secret.
The document in Mynx's hand held that very secret. The recipe
for the regenerative formula was inscribed on its pages. She
need only obtain a sample to fufill her contract.
She looked around the lab. A metal box sat on one counter.
She approached the box and opened it. Inside were three hyperdermic
vials. She picked up the first, which was empty, and proceeded
to the next two vials. One contained a dark yellow-green fluid,
and the other held a greenish-blue formula. Judging by the
label on the case, the two solutions were the reanimation
and regeneration formulation formulas. The question was, which
was which?
Ah, well. Mynx decided she could find out after she escaped
the fortress. She placed the two vials in her side pocket.
If nothing else, the reanimation formula could prove an attractive
sale for another potential buyer.
Suddenly, from outside the room, Mynx heard the sound of a
large weapon being prepared. Surprised, she loosened her grip
on the empty vial. Realizing her mistake, she reached for
the vial as it fell, but she was unable to prevent it from
clattering to the table.
She paused, tensing up. The person outside paused in turn,
then began slowly stepping towards the door. Knowing that
running would likely cause her adversary to shoot first and
ask questions later, she remained still. Her right hand inched
towards the knife on her belt.
The door was creaked open by a large boot. A large gatling
gun entered the room first, followed by a gruff-looking soldier.
His uniform and appearance suggested an Allied soldier, but
how could one man get this far into the castle?
Mynx stood still, waiting for him to make the first move.
