Jailbreak No More? Did RxN throw away the key?
- By LadyICE
Wha? Huh? Jailbreak shut down? No more Jailbreak updates? No Jailbreak for Q3? Say it ain't so!! If you're a Jailbreak fan, you may have heard some of these rumors circulating around the community lately. Currently, there seems to be a rift between the mod's team and the JB player community; some complaints were made, some feelings got hurt, words were exchanged, and communication broke down. Now, word has it that Team (RxN) Reaction has scrapped all plans for any future releases or updates of Jailbreak. So
how and why did things become so confuxulated in the Jailbreak community?
Basically it all comes down to the fact that Jailbreak is a bit buggy, and fixes have been far and few between. Its strong community following had become disenchanted by what they felt was a lack of support for the mod, and began voicing their opinions on RxN's Jailbreak forum. Things got a little ugly, prompting RxN to shut down the forum (which has since popped up at a new location), adding fuel to the fire.
Recently, in a brief interview with Online Gaming World, Jailbreak's programmer, anarchy, stated that JB version 2.5b should be out reasonably soon, but that 2.5b would be the final
release. After talking with several members of the Jailbreak community, it is
clear that their biggest concern right now is getting a bug-free, stable version of the code, and getting it soon. Also, according to Neotic of Jailbreak Extended, mappers for the 2.5b release have grown tired of waiting to see their maps played, so they have gathered together and are making a pak themselves. Another concern expressed by the community is whom would be responsible for the coding of a Jailbreak version for Quake3, if there were to be one.
I talked with JailBreak's programmer, anarchy, and Project Leader, WhiteNoiz, in an effort to clear up any rumors or misconceptions the community might have about the future of Jailbreak. Here's what they had to say about the current status of Jailbreak and its future:
WhiteNoiz: "Plans have not been scrapped.. we will still be releasing 2.5b which will address any final issues and complaints. After that it is unlikely that we will do anything else on Jailbreak for Quake2 unless there is anything that is really lacking/wrong. We have supported Jailbreak for almost two years now. That is a pretty big commitment, and we are still planning on doing Jailbreak for Quake3, once it is released."
anarchy: "JailBreak for Quake 2 will be finished with the release of 2.5b. There is no current ETA on that. Furthermore there will be a Quake 3 Arena version of JailBreak made. The event that originated these rumors was when I shutdown the JailBreak forums. I didn't shut them down because RxN no longer cares about JailBreak, I shut them down because a number of people were being complete assholes. The forum was no longer serving its purpose of being a helpful place for RxN to get community feedback and to improve the modification, but instead just a mud-slinging fest at assorted people, ranging from me, to RxN to server operators."
When pressed on the issue of a timeframe for a release for 2.5b, anarchy replied that he is a very busy guy, as are RxN's other two coders (WhiteNoiz with a full school schedule, and BinaryCowboy, who has his hands full with one of the team's other mods, Gloom). He also implied that the constant comments as to his competency and reliability being bantered about the community have lessened his motivation to work on Jailbreak, but because he loves the mod, he'll continue to work on it: "I work on JB because I like to design and play games. If everyone that played JB stopped, and I knew noone would play 2.5b, I'd still make it because it's fun. If you think a mod I worked on for my own pleasure sucks, well then go play something else."
As for any future versions of Jailbreak,
anarchy made it clear to me that he is not interested in working on anything beyond 2.5b. However, WhiteNoiz has assured me that there will definitely be a Quake3 version of JB, and that he will be the sole programmer on that project.
There's no denying that Jailbreak is one of the most kickass mods available for Quake2; its innovative, captivating (pun intended!), and just out and out good fun to play. Personally, I'd frag my granny to get JB 2.5b sooner rather than later. If she were still alive, that is ;-)
