Top Ten Reasons Quake 1 Rocks!
It's time to look at the classic Quake with fond remembrance, when Pappy-R and Ash take a look at just what made Quake rock!
  — by Pappy-R and Ash

Pappy: This time the PQ Top Ten list is a team effort. Ash didn't trust me enough to get all the Quake 1 strengths the way he thought they should be so I invited him into the mix. That's what this Top Ten is all about, reasons we think Quake 1 was the big daddy smack of the trio and will never die.

Ash: That's right, so strap yourself into the rollercoaster of nostalgia, because we're going to be singing the high praises of the multiplayer game that started it all. So without further ado, number ten:

No grueling model choices here kids.
#10

Pappy-R: Our number ten slot was hard to fill since finding the one feature we liked the least was no easy feat. We did manage to finally agree on the single player model being an important plus on the side of this old beauty.

Ash Definitely. The consistency of having just one model made the game seem even more rock solid. In fact, I use the Ranger model now in Quake 3 with forcemodels on, just because I like it so much.

Real men don't kneel.
#9

Ash: Crouching is unnecessary and lame. I just don't see the advantage of getting all hunkered down to the ground, just to walk slower, and make it look like your takin' a squat in the woods.

Pappy-R: Kneel before my vertical mastery! Stand up straight and catch my grenade in your crotch like a man. All I could think of in Quake 1 was how to go faster, not slower damn it!

There has never been a cooler ammo box anywhere.
#8

Pappy-R: Even though the NiN on the Nails ammo box was legally NOT to represent the Nine Inch Nails, the symbolism was far too strong and kool. That just makes it the sweetest box of pain-tacks going.

Ash: Fact, working Nine Inch Nails into the graphics of the game was just awesome. And considering the sounds of the metal tearing and gears grinding that composed the soundtrack, it probably helped remind some people what they were listening to.

The ultimate in personal protection.
#7

Ash: The ultimate in invincibility is still the Pentagram Protection. Nothing says, "I'm a bad ass from hell that's going to kick you into the next map" like actually being a bad ass supercharged by Hell.

Pappy-R: I don't really care one whit about the symbolism of the thing. I just like something that can offer that kind of "feel fresh security" that makes you feel protected enough to cuddle an ogre.

Now this is a nice spot to be in.
#6

Pappy-R: There was no arguments or excuses about the weapon and item balance in Quake DM. You either had an RL and RA in your pocket, or you were wishing you did.

Ash: And there is a beauty to that. If you had the skillz to pay the billz, you would run that map like it was your own backyard. And when someone else took control, you knew it was because they too had da skillz. The only balance needed, was the balance that skill provided.

Next, the Top Ten continues...
