Top Ten Reasons Quake 2 Rocks!
Last time worked too well to try and stop a good thing, this time Pappy-R and Ash take a crack at what makes Quake 2 Rock.
  — by Pappy-R and Ash

Ash: Oh yes, we're back for another Top Ten list this week with the Top Ten Reasons Quake 2 Rocks! Yah yeah, so you saw it coming. But you really just can't fight it when that much feedback mail says, "Do it or we pw33n your puppy!!" So without any more blabbing, or bloodshed, here's number 10:

I see you baby, shakin' that ass.
#10 - Player Models

Ash Without a doubt, one of the most eye catching things of Quake 2 right out of the box was the player models. After years of gaming with one standard (not very animated) model, seeing men, women, and cyborgs fragging together was something new and exciting.

Pappy-R: Oh man, it went so much further! Have you seen that little site called polycount? It was a revolution! Male, female, aliens, barbarians, cartoon characters, it was and still is limited to imagination only, and that's very fertile ground.

A moment of silence please. Glory is upon us.
#9 - BFG Returns

Pappy-R: The BFG, that Big F#@&ing Gun. It was back and throwing it's force around with more effect and pain than ever before.

Ash: Oh yeah, the first time I kicked off one of those green snot balls of instant death into a full room of Strogg I was amazed. The wind-up, the pitch, the homing beams, the explosion, the gibs... *sniff*... it was a religious experience.

Shhh. Be vewy vewy quiet. I'm huntin' wabbits.
#8 - Footsteps

Ash: For the first time, you actually made noise just by moving, and stealth actually became a concern, not a 'gimmie'.

Pappy-R: Shhhh...be vewy, vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits. Some think it took away from the game, but I always thought it added a new dimension to be used and exploited. It gave you away, or gave you another way to fool your foe in a tight 1v1 match. Hunting season had opened!

203? That's playable.
#7 - Net Code

Pappy-R: The Quake World experiment was a success, and was now implemented in the creation of the Q2 net code. Allowing better web play than ever before.

Ash: Better than ever is right, with the appearance of solid, integrated client side prediction, the world became easier to navigate, and I finally stopped blowing the hell out of myself against walls.... as much.

Such a selection, all terrifically lethal. What's a grunt to do?
#6 - Weapon Balance

Ash: After the domination of the Rocket Launcher and Red Armor in Quake, things started to change a bit for Quake 2. Now virtually every weapons was a deadly instrument in the hands of a skilled opponent. Now it was almost impossible to control an entire map by one single weapon, the task was to be a jack-of-all-guns.

Pappy-R: Who's Jack? Anyways, I agree. Quake 2 brought a sense of balance and proportion to the weapons that was required due to the new scale of the levels. Anyone wanna play catch with hand grenades after this?

Next, the Top Ten continues...
