Skin My Ash Results
It's time to hand out the swag, because the Community has stepped up to create some awesome skins!
  — by Ash

I'm still amazed when I check out the previous two skins, and realize that there are still two skins that I could find better. Our next skin is the Runner-Up, and as the second place winner he wins:

Cordite

Runner-Up: Cordite by Redlemons

Cordite is just plain seksi, and there is nothing that I don't like about this skin. One of my personal favorite styles of composition in all aspects of art and design is simplicity. A work with an element of simplicity becomes elegant, efficient, sleek, off of which are qualities I admire. Of course, one can't be to simple, it has to be a true work, and Redlemons pulled that off very well. The armor is featured and detailed, yet not gaudy or unbelievable. Relemons did a good job of adding "character" to the armor, with scratches and cracks, but still you'll find an element of simplicity here, the skin isn't wearing a mass of computer wires, or some other type of detail that is too busy to be noticed in combat anyway. The shades of blue and off white color provide a contour system that can be recognized as stylish even in the heat of combat. Contrasting that, is a very believable skin tone and hair on the model that makes the skin undeniably human. I love it, Redlemons is awesome, so is his skin. I hope he enjoys the swag!

Grand Prize: Ash by Unit23

I had a very good feeling about this skin as soon as it came into my mailbox, and of certain note, it came into my mailbox well before the deadline. That because everything about this skin is professional quality and just plain fantastic. Including in the well crafted pak file are default, red, and blue skins, along with bot files, and readme. The skin is titled Ash, after myself, for the contest, and it sweeps the contest just as I'm sure Unit32 had hoped.

The armor on the skin is a fantastic display of good shading techniques, presenting a type of armor that is almost "scaly", like a samurai armor. The different cells are each full detailed, with thigh guards and a honeycomb like chest plate that is just cool as hell. In the default skin, the chest is accentuated with some shader techniques, giving the honeycomb an electrified golden yellow sheen.. cracking with controlled power. In the red and blue skins, this area is honeycombed with white, giving a fantastic focal point for the model as is flies by, ready for action.

The head skin is worth a prize unto itself, with just a fantastic design job. Primarily a metallic helmet, I really love the lower face mask. It give me a Sub-Zero feel from the Mortal Combat series, with level of detail on the brow and white eyes just pulsating with an angry ass kicking expression.

My favoritism for simplicity in design is well heeded here, not in the level of detail, which is as complex as it carries character, but instead in the over all design. The use of color and texture breaks the model into easily definable structures, which just happen to form fit into the large muscle groups of the model, further giving the skin a domineering feel. The chest, shoulders, head, thighs, and boots are all exquisitely done to draw attention, yet balance in the whole.

Unit23, congratulations. Your prizes are well earned. And speaking of prizes, the phat GameSpy prize pack that Unit23 has won contains:

  • A GameSpy 3D registration,
  • a GameSpy Arcade registration,
  • a GameSpy t-shirt,
  • GameSpy mug,
  • GameSpy mouse pad,
  • and a GameSpy shot glass.

That's a ton of well deserved swag right there.
