Big Fuzzy Focus: Western Q3
Hellchick takes a quick look at a new Western-themed mod for Quake 3.
  — by Hellchick

The characters of Western Q3

There's nothing like hefting a Colt .45 in your hands, the desert sun beating down on you as you square off against the villian. The two of you stare each other down from each end of the dirt strip in the center of town; you catch a glint off the silver barrel of his gun. Then, you both draw.

Sure, it sounds like something straight out of a western movie, but the drama and intrigue of the infamous American West is making its way into Quake III Arena with Western Q3, a new mod hosted right here on PlanetQuake.

Western Q3 aims to bring new gameplay modes, weapons, and maps to the Quake III engine, giving you a completely different Q3A experience. This isn't just Q3A in the Old West -- you'll be playing in new game types like Bank Robbery and score points based on the new prize/reward system.

The German team from Western Q3 took some time out to talk to us about their upcoming mod -- Texture artist Fabian "Fake" Liedtke, coder and weapon modeler Daniel "Spoon" Hofmann, and PR guru and web designer Julien "Deimos" Clin gave us some insight into where Western Q3 is going.

PQ: What made you want to do a western-themed mod for Q3A?

Fabian "Fake" Liedtke, Texture artist: We just wanted to do something other than an anti-terrorist mod. There were lots of teams developing such mods for Half-Life, Unreal Tournament and even Q3A. The western background can give us new possibilities for gametypes and "new" weapon types.

Rollin', rollin', rollin'...keep those wagons rollin'...

PQ: How far along are you guys on the mod?

Julien "Deimos" Clin, PR/Web design: Actually, we started our work on the mod in February 2000. But we had some trouble with some stuff, especially with modelers. So, in fact, the real work started in April, when we had our first modeler. When there was no doubt anymore about whether or not we would be able to finish beta 1, we got launched at PlanetQuake.

PQ: Can you tell us a bit about the prize/reward system that you're putting into Western Q3?

Fabian "Fake" Liedtke: Well, yes...you start with some money. By killing somebody, you get paid the bounty set for his head and you get points. with the money you've earned you'll be able to buy weapons and equipment. The more points you have, the more money you get and the bounty for your head increases. But when you die your points are reset to zero. That means that when you get killed by someone else, this person gets the bounty for you and you respawn with your standard funds plus some extra money for the frags you've made during your last life. So there will always be some rich guys with a lot of frags and good weapons who must be killed. The names of the three most wanted will be shown in the frags list (thanks to Garfield who posted this idea!). The prize/reward system will be the basic system in WQ3 for round teamplay and Bank Robbery.

PQ: You're going to be implementing rideable horses in this mod -- that should be something cool and different for players. Are you finding any challenges in coding that in?

Daniel "Spoon" Hofmann, Coder/Weapon modeler: Well, this will be a real challenge for me. I've never coded something like that before, but I'm sure I'll manage it. The horses might seem like other vehicles from other mods, but they won't be, because they can also get tired. And depending on the horse's speed, your ability to aim will be influenced.

Annihilation scoreboard.

PQ: What are your personal favorites about Western Q3? What are you most proud of?

Daniel "Spoon" Hofmann, Coder/Weapon modeler: Well, I don't know what I should be proud of; beta 1 is just the main structure of our mod. Many ideas that will bring more atmosphere and tactics to the mod aren't included yet. Beta 2 will be the first beta with really good ideas, and we hope the fans will also think like that. But mainly I am very proud that we were able to bring out a beta version, because this is our first mod.

PQ: Are there any ideas you're thinking of at the moment that you might slip into Western Q3?

Fabian "Fake" liedtke: Yes, we thought of something like different character classes. By that I mean different abilities, more weapons and more gametypes, perhaps assassination and something with wagon trains (check our forum to see the great ideas from our fans).

PQ: What made you choose the Q3 engine and not, say, Half-Life or UT? Will you be branching out at all into other engines?

Daniel "Spoon" Hofmann: We chose the Quake 3 engine because we wanted an engine that wouldn't be old one year after the first mod release. And when we started to plan a Western-themed mod, Quake 3 had just come out. This was the perfect engine for such a mod. It was new, fast and everybody liked mods for the other two Quakes. So we decided to use the Q3A engine. We don't know if we're going to port the mod to other engines yet. This depends on the success of the mod.

PQ: We'd like to thank the Western Q3 crew for answering a few questions about their mod. If you'd like to know more, then step on over to the Western Q3 website, right here on the Big Fuzzy. Yeehaw!
