PlanetQuake Christmas Contest 2000 Results
The Christmas Contest has come to an end, and Pappy-R is here to hand out the swag.
  — by Pappy-R

Things go as they will and although our contest had a short "work time" for authors and we only recieved a few entries, I think what we ended up being able to offer is worth it. Now let's just give away the goodies!

Christmas Map Contest

Starting with the map division, the creators were to make a Christmas and PQ themed original level for either standard Team Dm or CTF. The levels must be submitted in proper pk3 format and usable by in-game menu. That means it's gotta work perfectly so we can distribute it right here on PQ and people can just grab and frag. It actually came down to giving points for ech requirement to decide a winner. We got two entries of completed work and they're both winners. You'll be very glad you grabbed both of the levels we're about to show you.

I gotta break my Stainless Caaage!

Second Place Level:

The level is called Stainless Cage and was done by Kit Carson and it scored him some GameSpy goodies for his work. The level is big and roomy FFA battles are going to just kick some butt in here. The level packs some new shaders into a tech facility that strikes me as some sort of transpost depot. You'll see PlanetQuake proudly pimped throughout the level on new graphic bearing signs that really look great in the map's theme.

Losing a couple minor points for not being an option in the Teamplay menu within the game, only the Free For All category, the map actually does better in FFA than team and the new Q3A v1.27 bots seem to like the layout as well. That's a pretty small point to lose and that's how close this level came to taking first place in the contest. far from second rate!

I'm dreaming of a white, fragfest.

First Place Level:

Our top dog for the Signed copy of Q3: Team Arena is Ice Cold by Killaz. This sweet looking Quake III CTF level plays as good as it looks and we had a hell of a good time testing it. Taking the theme to heart the level has an outdoor section where you'll get some snow and even a handy snowman. PQ signs of course can be found in the level to top it off and the level boasts custom textures from various sources including the author himself. Bots do play the level but as noted by Killaz, they tend to stay in the lower level, maybe the snowman freaks them out. At any rate, grab this one up quick for some sweet and well paced Q3 CTF games.

Congrats to both map makers and we thanks them for their work, now let's get to the model section of the contest.

Christmas Model Contest

We didn't get an entry that followed the contest rules, but we do have some great efforts that could become some real treats when they're done, along with one that was popular before the contest opened. I've had to make a rough call on this section of the contest so take a look at the rules to see what the modellers had to do.

The model must be an original contest entry and must come in proper pk3 form with one skin included. We know this is a lot to ask, but we're putting out the goods here as well. The animations do not have to be all-original, but that could help separate the top slots from the rest of the pack.

I'm dreaming of a white, fragfest.

The only model that we recieved in complete form for the contest was the PQ Grinch by Mike and Bill Jukes. The model was originally done in November and released prior to the contest. They did do an awesome animation for the contest along with some new skin work and that PQ logo you see will pop up on the taunt animation. The brothers asked me if I would let the model into the contest, and I said I would. To try and remain fair to all the modellers that put in unfinished work I have decided I couldn't award the top prize of the autographed Q3: Team Arena but I'll give the Grinch modellers the GameSpy pack of prizes.

To give the modelling community a shot at the top prize, we'll use it for a new contest for a Quake III model in the new year. Artists will have much more time to create and finish their work, and I'll load up on more booty to give away including the signed copy of Team Arena. This seems the most fair way to deal with the results of the contest so watch close for your chance to snag the prizes in the new millenium.
