So, grapple, or no grapple?
Subject: grappling hooks
Personally, playing CTF the majority of the time I enjoy the grapple. I
think it makes CTF game play more fun, especially the offhand grapple, you
just can't explain that rush as your grappling out of a flag room with the
flag on your back and the wind in your hair :) I would much prefer to use
offhand than treat the grapple as a weapon, and when it is treated as a
weapon I tend not to even bother with it. I play mostly WFA (Weapons
Factory Arena) and I find myself only really enjoying the classes with
grapple. I don't really think grapple has a place in DM however....and am
not really a fan of it.
Grapple adds a whole new element to the game play, its not easy to be a good
"grapple monkey." Grappling takes skill and quite awhile to master, you
won't really find grappling that fun until you get really good at it. It
adds a new way to fight one on one when everyone is bouncing off the walls.
It is also a good way to get away from firefights and a good way to get
where you want to go faster.
Some people will like the grapple and some will not. I think it takes a
real skill to use correctly and people that take the time to learn it will
enjoy it in the end.

I'm personally all for the grapple, weather it be offhand or not. It add's to game play I feel, because your no longer running around a maze like a rat. Your tactic's must now be changed from a 2D playing field to a 3D one, where movement is no longer limited to forward & back and side to side, but also up and down. This bring's in getting to know your enemy movements better along with the map that your playing on, thus making you a better player.
This idea of please stand in front of me so I can shoot you is foolish to say the least. I mean should I just be trying to run in front of your rocket's so that I can make you feel better about your skill as a gamer? Heh sorry I'm going to strife, jump & hook if possible to get out of the way of your weapon's & still try to bring my weapons to bear on you. If your not good enough to keep up with me then tough sh*t. :^)
The idea behind the game play in Quake is to out gun & out smart your ememy, its not a blow for a blow to see who falls over first.
With the offhand grapple there is no such thing as a camper, heh atleast not for long (offhand grapple + railgun = dead camper). :^)
While I'll admit that most of the map's out for the Quake engine game's are a little tight for the offhand grapple, I think that will change with the release of Q3TA, to where the offhand grapple will seem more nessary, than it currently doe's.
Bringing ping into the discussion is mute since it has nothing to do with the grapple, if you are a HPB then get on a sever that has only HPB's on it, very simple isn't it.
It all come's down to a matter of taste and/or skill level.
Hook Monkey's unite & gibb the Slug's and leave their slim on the floor that they are so found of. :^p
Subject: Rants 'n Raves: Offhand Grapple
'Eh, grapples (offhand or otherwise) are nothing to really worry about.
Chances are that the person who is a master with the hook is probably good
enough to kill you any other way and therefore already has an advantage over
you. The other 95% of the "hook monkey" population aint that good and just
end up looking like little Sarge piņatas.
The only REAL overwhelming advantage there is out there (aside from cheats)
is just good ol' fashion SKILL!! If you logged onto a server you agreed to
play in a pre-determined environment using pre-determined physics with
pre-determined weapons. Everyone on that server is using the same weapons
and areas of the map you are, and in so doing you have every advantage they
do. So it boils down to SKILL. If you're on the bottom of the scoreboard
it is because you are either no good at this particular mod YET and you need
to practice, or you suck.
If you don't like them don't use them. Don't play on a server that is
playing them. It's not like there aren't 5,000 other servers running at the
same time. And most of all don't turn it into a HBP vs. LBP issue!!

The offhand grapple definitely changes the game balance. Note that I said changes, not destroys. In a game full of ground pounders, rockets are usually the weapon of choice. It's relatively fast, damaging, and forgiving. All you have to do is get a shot close to their feet and at the very least you'll splash damage them. If you're lucky, the blast might even boot them into "the wrong place".
Add an offhand grapple to the mix, especially one with a high pull rate. Suddenly your target can move a lot faster and can travel through the air. Not only do you now practically have to score a direct hit on him (no splash damage if he's airborne and you miss), but your bullet is effectively traveling a lot slower as well.
Suddenly the instant hit weapons like the rail, shotgun, and machine gun, are a lot more attractive. Even the plasma gun and BFG (but we won't go there) stand a better chance than the rocket.
Personally, I think this is a good thing. I enjoy seeing people using weapons other than the rocket all the time.
Does it change the game? Certainly. Does it unbalance it? Hardly.
If you want 2-D, go play Doom.

To be honest, there doesn't seem to be much of an argument here. Like it was said in the article by a few PQ staff members, the offhand hook creates a different style of gameplay. You either like it or you don't. Personally, I tend to play more mods these days that don't use any type of grapple, but back when Lithium II was in it's hayday, that was what I played most. There was something fun about having the ability to hold a weapon and zip around a map in a way that just couldn't be done in standard DM, and it wasn't unfair since everyone could use the hook. Again, it's just a different type of gameplay, and who's to say that you can't just enjoy both styles. After all, it's part of a modification, something that makes part of the game different. To use the argument that it's not good because it changes gameplay makes no sense, since that is basically what mods are supposed to do. CTF made gameplay different from the original DM style of play, but people enjoyed both, and didn't say that the gameplay was different and therefore bad. Bottom line is the same old cliche: If you like the offhand grapple, play mods that use it, and if you don't, no one is holding a railgun to your head to make you play them (hopefully).
Lee'Mon: It's unanimous: Grapple whiners are namby pamby wussy little fruitbats. Complaining about the grapple is a lot like complaining about flamethrowers, homing rockets, and rails that shoot through floors: It's your fault for playing that mod. There's enough mods for all Quake games to let you play whatever way you want. Don't like a new feature? GET OFF THE SERVER!
Demonwench: Swing like Tarzan to yer heart's content! If it works for you, go with it. If it doesn't, find sommat else. Think that grapple monkey sux? Gib 'em. That guy yelling at you for being a grapple hooker? See previous command and enjoy y'all! ;-)
