PQ Mailbag

Incoming!

Demonwench: Whew! This week was a very busy week here at the good ol' PQ! We got Rants N' Raves, the revealing of the All Game Radio, and an editorial! So of course, all this nummy goodness has generated a whole smegload of feedback! I luvvit when y'all get riled up about sommat. Brings a tear to m'eye, sniff!

Pappy-R:It has indeed been one hell of a week DW. I'm still a little dizzy. You pop some letters up while grab a comfy spot to sit.

Demonwench: First, I'll use my eeevvvvil mind powers to bring you all the stuff you thought about the Rants N' Raves. This week, about the mod communittee. Is it going down the crapper? We'll see what you thought.

The Community

Subject: Cheeters among Men(and Women)

Dark Angel makes a valid point, but I think it's more of a prespective. Like some PQ'er staff said, the community is bigger so there is more cheaters, but about the same ratio. I think cheating has just been published on the gaming sites more then in the past. There's more people and someone is eventually "Hey, this guy cheated!" I do see some declind in the Quake community though. When in college I used to play Q2 online frequiently, as well on campus servers (host be me thank you very much!). Almost every time I played on a public server people complained if someone was good with the rail, or their ping was lower. Then it seemed noone chatted at all! Sad to say, but the last good online game I had was with the UT demo. I had a high ping but still could dish out some dammage. I beat a couple of low-pingers. Yippie! We even chatted and earged eachother on, and congratulated eachother on a match well done. When I played Quake 2 online last I got a "Camper Fa%&t!" typed my way, all because I waited for someone to run around the corner (not my fault if they were predictable). With Q3A, I have crappy on-line play. My best inet connection is a 33.6 connection. Maybe I will play Q3A at work when... IF we get a fast inet connection there (2-way satalite with a p200mmx! Extreem Quake man!)

Demonwench: Well, y'all should know by now how I feel about cheaters. If you don't, you haven't been reading the Mailbag! How dare you! I say, if yer gonna play, play, and don't yell at people if they frag you! Just frag 'em back!

Pappy-R:That's what it's all about, frag whatever moves and don't feel bad about it. Unless of course it's a team game and that was your own player. Oh and cheaters suck!

I see all your points about cheating, and you all seem to agree on on e major point - cheaters are llames.

I like to play on certain servers at Quake 2, and more often than not enjoy myself, but when certain Uphill Garderners like [name withheld] join using his bot, and then because of this people leave the server is now empty of people who were having a good game. Now why does they have to do this ? Do they think that us non-cheating, mere morsales are gonna repsect them for their higher frag count? If I wanted to cheat i could download a bot no problem - everyone can, its just that when im spending my time playing Quake, i want to enjoy every second, (whether im winning or losing, it doesnt matter) and not be wasting my time being lame.

Sorry for the dribble, but it really pisses me off.

Demonwench: Whoo hoo! Exactly! Play for FUN!! You know that word, say it with me! FUUUUN!! Who cares if you win or lose??! Just play yer brains oooouuuut!

Pappy-R:I can never figure out why some people would pay bucks for a program to let another program have all the fun. Bad economics.

Subject: Re: Rants & Raves

In all my years worth of experience in playing Quake and many other multiplayer games, I only see or hear about people cheating on extremely rare occasions. Once when playing a CTF game of Unreal Tournament I seen someone on the blue team using a skin that made his player red regardless of his team. Everyone on the red team (including me) found this very annoying and he was banned from the server. Problem solved. I was once at a LAN party (150+ people) and someone did the same thing and he was forced to leave. Problems solved.

If all you do is complain and gripe about the minor problems in the community then YOU are ruining the game for yourself and possibly others rather than the so called cheaters/campers/llamas. Shut the hell up and play the damn game, if you don't like it, go play somewhere else or don't play at all because we don't want to hear your whining. I think that stuff like cheating and lameness is just overhyped by all the whiners so they have something to complain about when they get knocked off the map on Q3DM17. Of course there really are people that cheat, hack, and take advantage of exploits in games (speed hack in Counter-Strike, anyone?) and these things have to come to an end but bitching about it will just contribute to the problem. Be apart of the solution.

Demonwench: Well, if someone doesn't bring it the attention to the servers, ie "bitching," then how are they going to deal with it? Just ignoring something isn't going to make it go away...

Pappy-R:Hmm...I go away when ignored.

First off, I haven't played a whole lot of Q3, mainly because its to yuppy like for me now, but thats something totally different. I still play Q2 online a lot and for the most part that I've played, people are still friendly. As far as people whining about losing, thats somewhat expected, I know how my friends are when I play them in LAN games, and I trash them. They get totally pissed and don't want to play. But a lot of people don't understand what some of us go through to get as good as some do. When I started playing I got the hell fragged outta me to just like my friends do now. But for the most part I haven't noticed that many bad attitudes, except from the campers. Which camping doesnt bother me that much, cuz it is a style of play, I don't camp at all, and people that do, really bug the hell outta me, but regardless its a style of play. The only part of the community that bothers me anymore is the slow decline of Q2 servers. IMHO Q3 doesn't hold a candle to Q2. The rockets look like crap and the rails are colored lines, Q2 had better weapon details by far. I just wish there were more old school soldiers left.

Demonwench: I'm glad you don't seem to be affected by the "decline" of the communittee. And I like yer definition of camping, it's a style of play. Deal with it.

Pappy-R:This guy is gonna be happy real soon from what I've been seing in the Q2 scene. It's coming back to some degree.

While I agree that cheating in multiplayer gaming under any circumstances is just a plain old bad idea, I don't think the situation is as bad as DarkAngel_V1 makes it out to be. Most of the Quake and Half-Life community i've encountered (except in Counter-Strike, which seems to have turned into a llama magnet) has been pretty good, with only a few paople on the servers bitching and moaning about how you got them through the head with a rail shot, be it from either fluke or skill. Maybe what needs to be done is to somehow have the cheaters somehow shunted into a particular game or mod (CS most likely, as that has the biggest proportion of llamas), leaving the rest of the servers relatively llama-free. of course this is unlikely to happen.

What I can't quite get a grip on is why do cheaters cheat? Wouldn't they want to know where they actually stand and maybe even improve their skills, rather then cheat and reduce their skills to the point where they actually need the cheat to last longer then five seconds? I guess we'll never really know what makes cheaters cheat.

Demonwench: Hail, Dan, hail! Huzzah! I applaud thee! I've been saying this stuff since I took over, I mean, started helping with the Mailbag! I'm glad that I'm not the only one out there who thinks it's better to improve yer own skills to OWN the game!

Pappy-R:Cheater, cheater pumpkin eater! It's a pumpkin fetish, that's it!

Demonwench: Right, now next topic!! The editorial! Come on in! There's plenty of people here!

Next: Time to "Get Real".
