PQ Mailbag

Welcome to the first mailbag of September, as if that's some kind of milestone or something. While we're on the topic of "things you could care less about," Dire Hamster is still the perennial mailbag sidekick and my computer is still, to use a technical term, "all busted up." Right now the question has been reduced to Asus vs Abit, so if you've formed some sort of rabid opinion on the subject feel free to let me know. We now return you to the normal rambling in progress.

?otW time

At QuakeCon, John Carmack made a few waves when he talked about deathmatch in Doom 3. As it stands now, broadband is in, and jump-in servers are out. That's right, from the look of it servers will be synchronous - i.e. everyone starts at the same time, like in Doom or any given RTS. Comments on the subject were surprising muted.

From: Stephen Howe
Subject: What do I think about the possibility that Doom will require synchronous connections for multiplayer?

I personaly think it will suck. Sure, it will be great for tourney games (but most gamers don't do that), but what about average joe fragger who just logs onto gamespy to play a game, and finds out all the servers already started, say "FU D3!" and goes to CS? Warcraft and CNC require synchronous connections for multiplayer, but in those games if you don't all start out at the same time, someone starts with an advantage. Westwood didn't do that for Renegade (which wasn't pointed out by id). And do you really want to wait 30 minutes while your buddy figures out how to start his warzed copy so you can play? Why not just bring back complete command line multiplayer like in the origional doom?!
id should make a server variable that you could enable synchronous connections if you want them. That would make almost everyone happy (except that counter strike @$$).

a madman: I'm pretty sure that, like the (very likely) broadband requirement for multiplayer, synchronous connections aren't something that were added "just because." Nor will it be something that you can just enable or disable at a whim. It's all because of the... um... physics. Not the tourney players.

Dire Hamster: Yeah, it's those darn bumpmaps. They keep getting stuck in those narrow telephone lines, especially going around corners.

a madman: No, I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that you can kick boxes around and shoot out lights.

Dire Hamster: Is it really a problem if the Counter-Strike players decide not to play? The game is like a giant holding pen for cheaters and assholes. Is that really a seal that we want broken? Besides, right now they're not even working on multiplayer right now. None of this exactly nailed down...

a madman: But I thought it would make good mailbag fodder (I was wrong).

Dire Hamster: ...but I wouldn't be surprised if we can expect some kind of "Doomworld" around 2004. Just remember next time that it's never a good idea to put a word like "synchronous" into the question of the week. The average mailbag write-in clearly isn't on friendly terms with the dictionary. Its' more of a strange, unfamiliar object, much like the obelisk at the beginning of 2001. Only made of paper.

a madman: All right, this time it'll be strictly monosyllables. Or should I stick to a large monolith of alien origins?

The other answer

Going to do something a little different here, because this next letter was just a bit long and rambling to respond to in one sitting.

From: "Michel Van Leuven"
Subject: feedback from games keeper

I don't think theyre gona use crossed conections bud they did say that the multiplayer wouldn't be big . something like a 4 player deathmatch .

and about the hardware for doom 3 don't wurry about it .
I played quake 3 arena and team arena for 2 month on a pentium 1 200 mmx with a riva tnt 2 sniper 32mb and 256 mb ddr ram
and it ran fine .(by the way I can even play wolfenstein and sof 2 on it )
so doom 3 will not any problem .

a madman: I wasn't aware they made motherboards that supported both a Pentium MMX and DDR ram.

Dire Hamster: Who cares? Does this have anything to do with anything? I played Doom 2 on a 486 with 8 Mb of ram. Is he saying he thinks you'll still be able to run it with those specs?

a madman: I'm guessing so. This reminds me of a guy I know that runs Quake 3 at 320x240 with FSAA set to the maximum setting. Don't ask me why he does it, but he claims that it's "surprisingly playable." I'm pretty sure, though, that if your video card doesn't support DOT3 bumpmapping then you're probably SOL on this one. These acronyms are starting to get on my nerves, though, so let's move on. And for future reference, please don't call me "bud."

then for the guy who wants to plqy quake with a flamethrower .

if you have quake 3 aarena go download generations arena . the earth model has a flamethrower . and soon there will be resurgence for generations arena . and then you can set monsters from doom quake 1 2 and 3 on fire if you survive . www.planetquake.com/wirehead/generations

Dire Hamster: Actually, in the letter the guy said Quake. If we're including the entirety of the Quake trilogy then why not just include games based off the Quake engines why we're at it? Alice had a wand that shoots ice, and that's sort of like a flamethrower.

a madman: Right. Not to be pendantic or anything, but he did specify the Quake that had dogs in it. But hell, why not just recommend Wolfensten 3d for the Mac? That had a flamethrower. And dogs.

about those games getting harder .

I think games are getting easier .
who of you guys played out doom 1 2 and the final without cheats ?
then quake 1
then quake 2
and quake 3 you played out in a couple of hours
wolfenstein was a weekend in my hands and if you played it out its one you don't do it again anymor . I think the only tgame I played out and play out every time I install my pc again or almost every 2 months is SIN because it just stays fun .

Dire Hamster: How about the Ralston-Purina "Chase the Chuck Wagon" game? Sure, playing the game may be one of the most painful experiences that doesn't result in sterility. Sure the manual may have been written by a ing syphilitic retard in a paper hat. But damn, if the game didn't make me want eat dog food. A canny advertising move, indeed.

a madman: I suppose so, but I've never heard a comment that had less relevancy to anything in all the time I've been writing the mailbag. So back to the question - I never beat Pitfall or Space Invaders, and those are old. Do those count too?

and now a question or all of you

GAMES KEEPER

a madman: Apparently he forgot to actually write the question. Not that I'm complaining.

Dire Hamster: Maybe he just overflowed the mail server's buffer with that long-ass letter.

a madman: Either way, it's finally over. Let's move on, shall we?

Yet more feedback

I'm really not sure if this next letter was supposed to go to Jube, but crazy people are fun.

From: "adam el-khury"
Subject: fedback 4 quakescope

Hello Four me quake scope has changed a lot in my gaming life. At the beginning I read it but I didn’t believe it but suddenly one day I was playing (very well I have to say) and I notest that it was the same day that Jude had said in qukaescope. And then bit by bit its al been coming true like last week she said that I wouldn’t be up four playing and it was true I could play properly at all.
So in conclusion quakescope is helping me out a lot.
O and make shore Jude keeps on quakescoping us fragers

Prisoner_off_war

a madman: Three words for you - "self-fulfilling prophecy."

Dire Hamster: I have three words too. "Stay off the crack." Wait, that was four. Oh well, who ing cares?

a madman: Seriously, those things are for entertainment only. You scare me. And as an aside to Jube, please refrain from mentioning good days for marriage or illegal activities in the QuakeScopes. I don't want to end up reading about this in the newspaper...

Next: more mail. Who would have guessed?
