Subject: 1.32 point release

Well, it hasn't crashed Generations yet so I'm pretty much happy with it, and the finally fixed the r_roundimagesdown 0 bug! Hey, I've got a GF4, I can afford the GPU hit for the ultra-high texture detail. :)

I like the idea of sticking it to the cheaters, so I'm happy for the Punkbuster support. Cheaters suck. I will be happy once Id releases the point source so we can add the Punkbuster toggle to our UI files. Right now a lot of players are griping that you have to manually change the cl_punkbuster variable in the q3config.cfg file if you're launching through a third party scanner program or using a shortcut to load a mod that has a different UI. The one thing I don't understand is why Quake 3 couldn't have been configured to just have the server transmit to the client if it's running punkbuster during connection and have the client enable/disable it automatically. Even if it required a reconnect the client could automatically handle that after updating the punkbuster setting. To the player it would appear to be seamless and would eliminate the player having to toggle it manually. If I could change one thing that would be it. Otherwise good job, down with cheaters!!

a madman: I know I'm being pedantic here, but I'd think that someone who was attending college in the nation that invented the freaking English language would know how to use it. But anyway...

Dire Hamster: Well, we could have done some thorough research, and found some sci-fi Hunter painting, but it would be much easier to just find the first result from a web search and assume that's the one you're talking about. That said, I assume this is the painting you're referring to.

a madman: I'm sorry, but doing a more thorough job would have involved finding the Quake 3 manual and reading the art credits. Since the Q3 manual was just slightly less informative than reading the side of a cereal box, I glanced at it once and promptly lost it. It's probably buried somewhere beneath mounds of empty liquor bottles and copies of "Sacrifice" and "Aquanox." The ironic thing about that is that I know exactly where my Unreal Tournament manual is...

Dire Hamster: You know, one thing about that picture, though... Why did the bear use a gun? Did it's claws not work? Or has it just finished disemboweling him, and now it's stealing his gun?

Is this some sort of statement on animal rights? Because, well, ok, I can sort of see where they're coming with shooting at deer, but when you're after something that weighs 800 pounds and has flesh rending claws, I don't think it makes you a pussy to actually use a gun to hunt it.

a madman: On the other hand, real men hunt deer using nothing but a Bowie knife. Or their teeth. At least, that's the way I'd do it if I hunted.

Dire Hamster: And not only did the bear jack his gun, it stole his hat too - because apparently once an animal starts acting anthorpomorphic, it can no longer be naked.

You know, what is it about cartoon characters, and wearing one or two pieces of clothing and calling it "not naked?" Donald Duck, for example. Not only was the guy completely inarticulate, but the dude never wore pants. I guess the Navy had less strict rules back then. He was probably on shore leave, so I guess I can't blame him.

a madman: Hell, if YOU could get away with not wearing pants in public I bet you'd go for it.

Or maybe that was me. And for that matter, maybe I already did. And maybe it wasn't so much "getting away with it" as it was "being arrested for indecent exposure," but they're practically the same thing. But if that cop hadn't been there, it would have been just fine.

Subject: Hello PlanetQuake - please help

Hello fellow gamers.

Im not a Quaker myself but thought I would try and approach the venerable Quake community for help and advice. Im not sure where to start as this community is so big so I apologise in advance if this is the wrong place for this e-mail. If so any guidance as to an appropriate contact would be appreciated.

First of all, my particular vice is MOH allied assault online. You may be wondering why I am approaching quake bods at all. The reason is because MOH is based on the Quake engine and I need to contact people with established experience in this technology.

I was recently invited and joined a clan. The clan in question runs its own server which has become extremely popular amongst the general public and other clans too. Part of the reason for this popularity is that we push 'fair play' quite hard and try to encourage people to play the game as 'out of the box' other than the use of new maps.

Unfortunately we cannot enforce 'fair play' as we know of no way to detect many cheats and mods in order to justify clientkick or IP blocks. In fact our game policies attract many cheaters. Now I have tried approaching EA about this issue for help but somehow I dont think I'm going to get very far.

Essentially I am after suggestions or advice on any utilities or such that can be used for detecting client mods or cheats.

I am sure this must be a long running issue in the online Quake community and so I thought people such as yourselves may be able to offer some advice.

Dire Hamster: Well, I did a search to try and find something about anti-cheat measures in Medal of Honor. The best I could find was a petition asking to add anti-cheat measures to Medal of Honor. There have been a few patches, but other than that, you're on your own.

In all seriousness, I'd suggest that you consider switching to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It has had punkbuster support built right in from the get-go. According to counter-hack, there is not a single major hack available online for Wolfenstein MP for this reason.

Besides which, I think Wolfenstein is just a better game - and I think this goes a bit beyond personal taste. I've played the normandy demo for MoH, and I've played the beach assault map for RtCW, and, well, maybe they just weren't concerned with historical accuracy in the Wolfenstein version, because it was actually possible for both sides to win. The one in MoH was so hard, I think Spielberg may actually have been secretly rooting for the Nazis.
