ZZzz..

Tikki's editorial Capture The ZZzz.. brought in a huge sack load of mail, some of it defending the flag, some it attacking, and some of it just running around shooting at random.

Subject : CTF

So, TiKKi may have been right about originality when people make game mods. Sure, they should come up with something new. But calling CTF an unskilled mod is just pathetic. You think your Capture and Hold, and Defend and Destroy mods are more skilled? All you're doing is something DIFFERENT. Different skills and strategies apply to mods.

That was probably the worst editorial I've ever seen published on PQ. Completely biased from someone who can't find a server for the mod they choose. Why would PQ post this? I should do the next editorial... "I don't like being banned from #Quake2 on Undernet" or something.

Some of the points Tikki makes in the Editorial are true. That there are too many CTF mods out there: I totally agree. However, to say that people don't make non-CTF mods simple because they are "lazy sons of bitches who can't think up something original or don't want to waste the time having to create a whole new mod" shows how biased the editorial is.

People have preferences, and is it that difficult to believe that some people out there actually LIKE CTF? I personally favour Rocket Arena 2 over CTF or such variants, and hardly ever play it, but the people who make the CTF mods are the people who think CTF is the God of all Mods...

And, of course there are a lot of them out there. If they were lazy sons of bitches, they would hardly spend the time to make a CTF mod like 3TCTF or Weapons Factory. They have their own tastes on how CTF should be played and make a mod accordingly. Unfortunately, there may be too many of these people.

This week's article is the most assinine load of hypocritical garbage ever spewed forth from some sexually frustrated mongoloid with an over-inflated notion of self-worth. [ "That's enough now, son" - Abuse Ed. ]

First of all, if you want to see some inspired mods so badly, why not code them yourself? Nobody is stopping Tikki from thinking up some fabulously new or incredibly twisted idea and then shaping it into a fun and popular mod. At least the authors are doing more than sitting on their asses complaining; they envisioned a concept for gameplay, said, "hey this would be cool" and then did it.

Tikki has a point. CTF is done in almost every game, and there's tons of mods that add something to it. A new team, a new idea, a new weapon, new maps, and it still is CTF.

He's wrong about why though. It's not done becuase people suck at everything else. It's becuase CTF rocks. It's a simple concept that provides for a lot of strategy, teamwork, and fun.

What I'm trying to say is no matter how hard you wish, CTF isn't going away, becuase you're just some out of place freak who thinks people listen to what they see on PlanetQuake. (If they did, Gestalt would be a much happier guy. ;-)

You go kill someone with a shot to the head on an AQ2 server and be happy. Just keep your mouth shut. I'll go school a bunch of ll4m4z in humility on a CTF server, and I'll keep my big mouth shut. (Okay, I won't, but it's nice to hear me say that, isn't it? =) But we'll both have fun, and that's all that matters.

Long live the king!

*SNIP*

I agree with you on the lack of original mods, but come on! Criticism for a lack of mods and dumping on one of the best mods out there have nothing to do with each other. Get a clue about CTF before you bash it, k? CTF is the most comprehensive TEAM game out there.

Well this was an interesting editorial to read. It avoided an important distinction--Starsiege Tribes in CTF mode is as dissimilar from Threewave CTF as apples are from oranges.

Sure, it has a goal, capture the flag. But when in Threewave CTF did anyone have to be a targetter for a mortar attack to take down defenses so that you'd even have a chance of getting close. When in Threewave did a team of 5 fly to the enemy base in a vehicle and rain death and destruction from above? Where in Threewave did you find turrets, rocket turrets, sensors, various base defenses, base generators? [ "Yeah, we get the point..." - Brevity Ed. ]

Although the goal is similar, in Tribes there is much that must be accomplished to achieve that goal. In Threewave CTF, in my experience, the game was all about one or two really good players going in, getting the flag, and grappling out and back to their base before they could get shot down, whilst their enemies vainly tried to shoot them down.

I'm inclined to agree with the popularity of CTF being that mod developers are just plain lazy. I know that I am!

The idea of "Me me me" in CTF is also something which I see a lot, I know I tend to not help out other teammates so much unless they're carrying the flag, and even then, I don't feel any remorse if they're taken out and I get to snag the flag.

One thing that I think has to be taken into account is when making rules for a game when doing a mod, is the learning curve. CTF is really simple, most everyone has played it in real life more or less, and so it's relatively easy for someone to sit down and get right into the game, in comparison to someone sitting down at a computer and playing "Free the squib" or something like that.

My main complaint about a lot of mods that I see these days is that they don't really seem to add too much to the game, a new flag model, a couple funky grenades, and that's it. Well I don't want to fit into that!

Capture the flag is fun, but that's not all that there is and I wish that more mod authors would realize this.

Subject : a-men! great editorial!

About time someone agreed with me! The new editorial, Capture the ZZZzzzz, hits the nail on the head. I try a lot of mods, but never any ctf variants anymore. lmctf, ctf, its all the same. The only 2 original games out there anymore--gloom and action 2, are all I play. Screw "a little different" i mean, "ultra" ctf number 361, give me something NEW! Gloom did that, Jailbreak did that. CTF variants just dont cut it :)

Subject : CTF bore.

WOOOO, there are others! I couldn't have wrote that article any different, CTF is getting boring, and anyway when you goto the D+D servers on tribes they do a vote and change to CTF anyway. So i just dont play CTF, i just run around getting practice. And when i noticed the Action Quake statement, I agreed completly, I love actionquake2, its really fun, its challenging and some servers actually use team work.

Amen Brother!

I run a tribes server, and personally I think Capture and Hold is the most awesome team-play FPS variant I've seen. Instead of concentrating the 32 people in 2 places it spreads the action out out to up to 6 bases. One person can defend a base adequately, (if their good) but you don't need to get huge multi-tiered offensive together just to get a few points. But whenever I'm playing people are always begging me to play CTF. Why don't they join a CTF server? There are several hundred!

As for me, I'm a Q2CTF addict. A fully paid up member of Flag Capturers Anonymous. But there is life beyond CTF, and as soon as I'm through the twelve step recovery program I'll be playing some of the other mods I've been gathering on my hard drive for the last year...
