Generations

Let's wrap up the comments from the cancellation of "Generations" in this mailbag:

From : Trevor
Subject :
generations

I see Generations as more of a bonus for id then anything. Seeing that Generations has ended, there are obviously lots of real reasons why it had to end. Being a non-profit mod I would have thought the companies would not have minded. It looked like it was going to be great, I just curse myself for not trying it out before this happened. I think the community should just give it a rest, id and the Generations team obviously understand this a little better than a bunch of Quake players. BTW, I do not recall "Your Path of Destruction" (Quake converted to Doom) having any problems like this...

Well, it's a bonus in the fact that id was getting free publicity and a kickass tribute to them. But it could also be looked at as a negative because... oh, maybe id Software has a game like that lined up in the future... you know, like a "Doom 2000" kind of game. And having a mod out that's the same as the game they're making for commercial profit might not be such a good idea for them.

Id suck dick for cancelling a free mod

Thank you for your deep insight.

Various Quake and Quakeworld things

Back to the basics...

From : Sandman
Subject : Newbies, MiddleClass, 0wn3rz

I have recently made quite an observation about our Quakeworld Community. Every time we go to a certain server, it is EMPTY. But, sooner or later, more people show up. See, my friends and I are what I call MiddleClass, ie. not great. But these people that join are all LPB 0wn3rz. (a word I think I made up to describe the best players.) So these people dominate us, and all the fun is taken out of our games.

We have asked people to leave and take on others of their own skill level, but no one listens. So, being the admin that I usually am there, I make good use of the "kick" command, to keep the fun in our games. But, some of these people come back, with retorts like "Getting 0wn3d and kicking, huh? llamas." I can understand this, but for god's sakes, how can wasting some people you are leaps and bounds ahead of in skill give you any sort of satisfaction? Go compete at your own level, and leave us to ourselves, dammit!

So, my point is, to all you 0wn3rz out there, if you are completely dominating a server, please pick up on the fact that these players you are destroying are not as skilled as you. Therefore, you should leave them alone, with their dignity intact, and find someone better to frag. I promise, you will be happier fraggin someone as good as you, then by wasting 3 MiddleClass guys such as ourselves. I believe I speak for ALL newbies and MiddleClassmen, when I say, "Leave us alone, and go frag someone your own size!" .

What HPBs forget is that LPBs are human too; they play on the server where they ping the lowest. It makes sense, doesn't it? I don't think I can name a single person who, after booting up and scanning servers in Gamespy, picks a server to play on where they get a really crappy ping. So LPBs, much like HPBs, will jump onto the server where they ping the lowest, it's only common sense. You can also look at it this way: the only method of improving your skills is to play somebody better than you. I don't get any better when I frag hapless newbies, so I usually end up moving to a server with better players. If these guys are sticking around, just keep playing with them and hopefully one day you'll get as good as them. Or maybe you'll just curse and throw your mouse into the computer screen, who knows!

Subject : A few questions

"Epicenter of Everything Quake?" Sure, whatever. It seems that you seem to cover Q2 and Q3A much more than Classic Quake. You may argue that nothing new is happening in the Q1 community, but if there is a fixed ratio of players of a game to editors of the same one, then there should be many more editors of Q1 than Q2. (If you don't believe me, look at the TF servers...) Even with the aspect of aging left in, you can still at least get poll questions that don't cater to us non-pr0n-viewing, Quake 1 playing(exclusively) people. Case in point: the very last poll's first question. And, as well, I think that the community has become much more...competitive and vulgar, to put it lightly, since Q2 went big.

Yes, I have and own Q2. No, I do not like it. At first, I thought it was a timewaster(for 15 minutes every month, maybe), too slow-paced and too greedy for system resources(I had a p133 without a 3d card at that time). Even now, I think that. I have played mods for Q2, yes. I've played Jailbreak and many other mods. But still, it just doesn't cut it for me. This may be just my opinion, but I highly doubt that nobody agrees with me. I guess I can use this place as a soapbox: Citizens of the Classic Quake community! Declare your allegiance and work on mods and maps! Make your opinions known! (Feeling a bit foolish, our hero steps back down.) But I do think that there are much more Q1 things than you're giving credit for.

While I agree with your second paragraph (about wanting the classic Quake community to become more active), I strongly disagree with your first. We post news on everything we get, from Quake 1-3. Do you think I sit here every day and say to myself, "Boy, here's another important news item regarding Quake 1, I think I won't post it and instead pimp a Quake 2 tea set that Hasbro is selling"? We just report the news; we don't make it. That's up to all you mod authors out there, and I sure as hell am not a coder. Heck, the only thing I've coded in the past couple of years was a VB Game that involved a stick character repeatedly opening a mailbox. And I sold the game's rights to ION Storm.

Subject : Deathmatch

I was going through your DM stratey page, it was very informing. I would just like to add my own comments to it if that is ok? Firstly, a great way to score heaps of frags is to use the grenade launcher and pound grenades into densely populated areas, such as the rocket launcher position or the quad damage. Since these areas are populated often, your bound to blast someone. This is very effective in DM3 The Abandoned Base - lie in the water and shoot grenades through the window where the RL lies, along with a teleporter to catch respawning players, and The Dark Zone. When players are fighting to press the 'Star' switch to open the door for the RL, sit on pathway above this area and drop grenades into the RL room or against the door. I saw my frag count go up by 8 in 5 seconds! And when fighting underwater, try to get as far beneath your enemy as possible as this allows for greater vision, and a lack of vision on their part..
