Week of: 12/10/99
It finally happened. The day I'd been ph34ring for a while. A shortage of letters for the mailbag. I think this has something to do with the release of that newfangled "Quake 3 Arena" game. Damn you, id software, damn you! You've made my job easy! I don't take to ease very well. Someone call me.. no one's home, and I'm lonely. Please? At least there were no Pikachu threats this week! Pika pika!

Subject: Just a question from a German guy...
Hi Guys there at PQ,
I have only one question.. all the Planets out there (PK,
Planethalf-life ect.) do they all belong to the gamespy group/company ??
Ja, das "planets" ist alles um.. I forget the German word for together. Well,
at least all of the Planets you see on the list here at PQ. The
other ones are rip-offs, and will be slaughtered. All the official
Planets are part of the GameSpy Network, owned by GameSpy Industries.
Sorry, I forget a lot of the German I learned. Das ist nicht gute.
Hat jemand schlagt du mit ein haesslich tweig?
Hellchick: Umm, Spyke, I don't think sNale is into that
sort of thing...

CU Later Quake d00de.
Just to let you people know, yes, this did arrive in a strange font.
Well, "Redline", it's good that you like us. But you might want
to type in a language someone somewhere can actually understand.
Do you talk like that?
Hellchick: Wouldn't it be cool if you could talk
like that? Yeah, that would be RAD! Oh, wait, no it wouldn't.

Subject: Q3 gravity
Can the gravity be changed in the Q3 Demo?
Why yes, yes it can! Oh, you want me to tell you how to change the gravity
in the Q3 demo. Fine then. In the console, type /devmap
and once the map has loaded, type /g_gravity and your
gravity will magically change! I forget the original value, but
I think it's about 800 or so. No problem, always glad to help
someone who wants to make themselves puke by messing with the
gravity in Quake!
Hellchick: Hey, what's the command to change my real-life
gravity? 'Cause, like, this 1 G stuff just isn't cuttin' it anymore.

Subject: 51 megs of open gl from the last mail bag
Um, the guy was right about downloading 51 megs of open gl. The readme for Q3DemoTEST directs you to www.glsetup.com for the latest opengl drivers for your card. It has a small downloaded program that will look at your card, and automatically download and install the appropriate drivers. However...the small downloaded program wont work if you use a proxy server to connect to the internet. The site directs those on proxy servers to down load a 51 meg file of all the opengl drivers. I use a proxy server, and there is no way I was downloading another 51 meg file. So I went to the 3dfx home page, got the drivers from there, which still didn't fix the open gl, I eventually fixed the open gl (long story) and have started playing the Q3demoTEST. Also, I scoff at your idea that adequate drivers come with the card. the Q3DemoTEST requires the very latest drivers, and I sincerely doubt that any drivers that came with a 3d card would work.
Fool. *Buzzer* Wrong again! Yes, GLSetup did come in a giant monolithic 51
megs, but they also released a version that clocks in at under
300 k, which you download, set up, and then it downloads just
the drivers for your card. So there! Bwahaha. Again, if you didn't
know, GLSetup can work wonders for your video card, and is available
Hellchick: I say you two duke this out in a large arena
with a combat rod and gravity plates. (Go rent "Phantom Planet",
if you can find it.)

What the hell does Dear Mynx have to do with Quake? That's just one of the reason's PQ has gone dooooownhill over time is because the site's layout is terrible, there is little interesting content on it, and what content there is is usualy irrelevant or filled with inside jokes.
Such a shame, perhaps things will turn around with Q3 getting launched.
Well, the site is getting redesigned as I said previously.. But Mynx?
Oh, buddy.. You don't mess around with Mynx. Not only does she
provide countless hours of entertainment to the readers of PQ,
and answers important questions, but she also has pictures of
us all doing things we'd really rather the public not see. So,
in short, Mynx kicks ass.
Hellchick: I thought I managed to steal back the negatives
of that pic of you and Delta Burke, Spyke, but Mynx caught me
and slapped my wrist. Sorry, dude.
Inversion and dna noisrevnI
Subject: Inverted Mouse
Wrath had an excelent question. Why do people invert? Inverting comes from using a joystick and playing flight sims. As a player of all the old classic flight sims, (chuck yeagers air combat, aces of the south pacific,) I, and many others who simmed, learned to fly that way with a joystick. Pull back, and your veiw raises. Push down, your veiw drops. We automaticaly transferd this motion to the mouse in other first person veiw games. Pull, your veiw raise, Push, it drops. People who learned to use the mouse playing non-flight-sim games find this odd, but thats just the way we learned.

Subject: Rodent inversion
After reading Austin's note about rodent inversion, I felt compelled to let you know of a friend of mine.
I myself don't invert my rodent, and neither do most of my friends, but the playing style of one of my friend's is freakish.
Glenn uses his right hand to control his movement and his left to look and turn with the rodent but he doesn't invert.
This would be normal except for the fact that he turns his rodent around so that the tail lies under his fore-arm, and then he hits the buttons with the heel of his hand. In Windows though, he uses it with his right hand in a normal fashion.
When I first met him I could not believe how he played.
It was unatural.
I know him better now, and it's still unatural, but I don't give a rats ass. He's comfortable with it and that's all that counts.
I still kick his ass in Quake's though :)
Casey, a.k.a. Dace
Playing styles in first person shooters are really weird. I've seen some people with some really messed up configs. I myself invert, and play with the "wasd" keys as arrows. I adapt my config to other games from there. And I only use a two-button mouse, and it's not USB, and doesn't have a wheel. So, in short, my config is portable, so it works easy on anything. This is not a cue for you idiots to send me your configs. Don't send them to me, send them to Mugwum! He's running a FPS config feature, on the most messed up configs ever. So e-mail your configs to firstname.lastname@example.org!
