How far would you travel to go to a LAN party?
I don't want to go to no stinking LAN party
I'd rather host my own
No more than a few hours' drive
The other side of country and far away...
To another country if it was a big event
gestalt: I'm going to London for my first (!) LAN party soon, that's a couple of hundred miles I guess. To go much further than that, it would have to be something very special, or paid for on expenses. ;-)
Fargo: Let's see -- I travelled 3000 miles to a LAN party once, stayed up all night the night before to finish everything I had to do at the office, and when I got there -- thanks to that and the three hours difference -- I slept through the whole thing. WEAK!
Void: I went across the country for 3 Beatdowns... and plan to again.
dweomer: Used to travel 400 miles every month to the Beatdown. :)
Joost: I've flown all the way to the other coast for a beatdown several times. Heck, I might even go to Canada if it's worthwhile.
Bastard: Depends on how good the Lan Party is.
How many people do you need for a great LAN party?
0 - bots rule!!!
1-20 - small, or just cosy?
20-50 - bigger is better
50-100 - Beatdown!
100+ - the more the merrier...
gestalt: I'll let you know when I've actually been to one...
Fargo: I'm leaning toward the 20-50 crowd, myself.
Void: 50 - 100, Beatdown style, of course!
dweomer: 20 is nice for just an evening... but 3 day Beatdown of 80 ppl is best.
Joost: Beatdown is almost pushing it these days. 40-60 seems a good number.
Bastard: You can have great Lan Parties with just a few people.... I think the potential for fun goes up with more people and great organization.
Did you download the Shogo demo?
No - it was too big for my modem
No - all the ftp sites were busy
No - it didn't look worth it
No - this is the first I've heard about it...
gestalt: Unfortunately my creaky old 56k modem would have suffocated on it. It took me about 8 hours to download the Sin demo...
Fargo: That many people didn't hear about it? Who's the dork in charge of promoting stuff on this network, anyways? (Oh, ah... oops.)
Void: Hell yeah... cable modems rule :)
dweomer: Hell - I uploaded it. :)
Joost: I don't know what all the fuss is about with huge demo downloads these days. 40+ megs download in a few hours on 56k. Well worth it. (That was a 'yes')
Bastard: Man oh man.... grab that sucker!
Which of the following would you most like to see a PPM of so you could gib them in Quake II?
Barney the Dinosaur
The Spice Girls
The Funky Drunken Monkeys
What's a PPM?
gestalt: Barney must DIE!
Fargo: Bastard, you give me that funny feeling in my tummy.
Joost: All of the above.
Bastard: Skinny gestalt? Good thing q2 uses bounding boxes!
What's the most time you've spent between Quake sessions
I never leave the computer
12 hours - I need my fix
24 hours - part of the daily ritual
48 hours - had to go away for a weekend
a week - yes, I have a life
a month - I spent a few weeks in rehab...
a year - Quake? I remember you...
I've never Quaked.
gestalt: I can live without Quake. Oh yes. Definitely. I could give up any time I want. Um .. er.. *fidget* Just one last time, OK? /me fires up GameSpy...
Fargo: This weekend I played no Quake. *twitch twitch.*
Void: I've gone a couple days before, but it wasn't easy.
dweomer: Month... there were a couple months where I played only at the Beatdown and not at all in between. doh.
Joost: Several weeks. I get less time lately.
Bastard: I'm ashamed of all of ya! I leave quake running in the background. ;)
How many of you have tried editing Quake? (models, maps, code, whatever...)
Hell yes! It's what I do for a living
Yes, I'm part of a mod/TC group
Yes, I've done some solo work
Yes, but nothing serious
No, I've never tried
No, I don't have time
No, I never worked out how to
Hell no! I just want to play!
gestalt: When I'm not working for PlanetQuake, I also run a company making Quake add-ons - The Coven.
Fargo: I've tried map editing. It's whacked. You have this perfect image in your mind of what you want, and then you have to break it down into shapes, and then you have to explain to some deaf dumb buggy editor where you want everything to go. Someone needs a plain-text voice recognition level editor. "I want a big room with a glowing reactor in the middle. No, a red one. Cool!"
Void: Yeah, I tried, but was quickly discouraged 'cause I sucked.
Joost: I did a moderate amount of Doom editing, but never managed to get the hang of it well enough to produce a good Quake level.
If you're kicking someone else's ass, what do you do?
It was only because of my 50 ping
It was because I was cheating
I get bored and leave
I taunt them / talk smack
I just get on with it...
gestalt: Hm .. I guess they must have fallen asleep at the keyboard. Must be time for bed...
Fargo: Collect my money.
Void: I just do my thang... unless they initiate the Smack Talk, I'll keep my mouth shut.
Joost: Smacktalk and hope my neighbours don't wonder about me.
Bastard: This is the first time I've said to myself "who the hell thought that these answers went with this question? How do these things happen?"
