PQ in Review
Spyke recaps last week and all the things you may have missed! - by Spyke

PQ In Review: Opening Up

That's right, the subtitle to your favorite column on PlanetQuake this week is "Opening Up". Get your minds out of the gutter, people; we're talking about id releasing the source to Quake 3 Arena! Depending on your viewpoint, this could either be fantastic or horrible, but more on that below. I said below, people, stop reading the source to see if there's possible way I could tell you any more in this paragraph . The mod explosion starts now.

News

Well of course the biggest news this week was the aforementioned release of the game source for Quake 3 Arena. Yes, this is the release that'll allow all you crazy programmers like myself to get started making your wild and crazy mods. You can grab the installer straight from FilePlanet right here. I expect that soon we'll be seeing some handy tutorials on the simple stuff, so keep watching! In regards to the Q3A source, and Rocket Arena 3 in particular, RA pimp daddy crt had a few comments that were pretty much echoed by Essobie of Rocket Arena 2: Inside and Out on the usability of the current source release, and what a pain in the arse it is to work with. Fortunately, crt's talked to Graeme Devine of id, and apparently these problems will be rectified, so I guess we will see RA3! Rejoice, people, rejoice. Another reason for rejoicing is the return of the PQ Poll! Yes, our perl scripts are finally working, and it shows. Thanks to the Poll, I have now achieved a new level of fame. Yes, I am an answer to one of the questions. Vote for me! Mynx did her usual thing this week, advising people on what to do in the case of girlfriends and naughtiness, guys loving John Romero, and giving us an Embarrassment Spotlight regarding a hospital, a need to go, and a cute student nurse. Read all about it in the latest Dear Mynx! You take a block from the bottom and you put it on top; you take a block from the middle and you put it on top. This is not the way to build a bot for Q3A. Want to know the real way to build a Q3A bot? Read Bot Building 101! Once again, I graced the community with my witty insights and barbs in this week's PQ Mailbag, which also features a whole durned page of Failed Pics! Love2Play busted out with some fantastic TechTips this week, and I was amazed that even a technical guru like I could use some of these.. take heed. Looks like that's it for the news this week; get ready for next week when all the mods come out. :)

Coming Soon

Site launches, baby! We're assimilating more and more sites, from mods to cool programs to level designers. Gotta catch 'em all!

A Contest Coming Quite Soon
You Can't Miss This, Bitch

We've also got a big 3 part article from our favorite editorial-writing slave Lee'Mon on upcoming Q3A projects, like mods, maps, models and all that jazz. Not to mention your usual helping of TechTips, the Mailbag, the newly-returned Poll, Dear Mynx, and the Models, Levels and Mods of the Week!

Question of the Damned

Still, we don't have people sending in questions. Perhaps I should post this to the forums, where I'd actually get responses. Are you people too lazy to use e-mail? Don't answer the question, by the way.. Send me new ones! This week's Question of the Damned is: "Which Quake game hero would you like to be, the Quake Marine, the Quake 2 Grunt, or Sarge, from Quake 3 Arena?"

Hellchick:

I don't want to be either of them, because, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm female! But if I only had those three to choose from, I'd pick Sarge, because he's such a bad ass.

Pappy-R:

This one's easy! I smoke, so it's Sarge all the way. I think the 32 bit colour of Q3A is also needed to catch all the grey in my hair. "Old Quakers never die, we just go into Spectator mode more often."

Spyke:

The Quake Marine, hands down. First off, he's old school, which instantly makes him cooler. Also, he didn't need any fancy hardware acceleration or colored lighting to look good, he was just there. He's the real thing, baby. Finally, he's got an axe. If you don't know how cool that is, you better axe somebody.

Spyke's Profound Thought

Whee, this is going to rule. I expect that next week, we'll see a bunch of mods being announced, and perhaps some even being released! This is where it all starts, people. It begins now! I love being cryptic. I have a theory. On the other side of a black hole, is a parallel yet backwards universe to ours, called the "uninverse". Cool, eh? Hopefully later in life, I can find oot what it's all aboot. I also think fluid physics should be integrated into the Q3A engine, so we can have cool water stuff. That is the epitome of all FPS games. Cool water stuff. Spork!
