The BFG
It had to be here sooner or later, here's the rave about the BFG.
  — by Pappy-R

All right! Let the opinions vary and maybe we'll get some action here. I'm going to balance those last two wordy efforts out with Spyke's SFB (Small Freaking Blurb) on the BFG (Big Freaking Gun). I think we're all stocked up on smiley faces now too, so let's just rip into it shall we? (/me throws the ball to Spyke who runs and...)

I love the BFG. In both Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena, it's the ultimate evil bastard weapon; you can totally kick ass with it, recovering amazingly from deficits. However, there's the downside, that inexperienced players can kill themselves many times by not respecting its power and wielding it carefully. Those who do wield it well, but use it as the aforementioned evil bastard weapon put grins on the faces of us other evil bastards. Long live the BFG!

  — Spyke

Well that sounds like a "for the BFG" to me. That's two in favour and one not so much. Love2Play did like the Quake III BFG, so it's not much of an opposition. Let's see what Ash has for us this time and maybe we can still get some nice juicy blood on the floor after all.

I'm totally game for the BFG. If it's in the game, and it's in the map, then it was meant to be used. I personally don't use the BFG too much, usually because I'm playing Rocket Arena 3, or one of the TMP maps that has everything moved around.

That's definitely another reason why I can't understand why people would whine about the BFG. It's not like there aren't a ton of servers out there that have it removed, with mods and such. And even the latest vanilla baseq3, (1.25), has a server option so the administrator can remove whatever they want.

So if you don't like the BFG, I say you should just move on to another server. No reason to complain, it's not even in that many maps to start with, and even fewer of the servers.

Damn! No blood spilled there either. At least it's not an all out tear on the poor reader like our recently ripped up buddy SQUID_squidly from last time. As usual I'll take the last shot at the topic and then we'll open up the floor to the rest of the audience.

The BFG was originally a single player weapon and designed for those monster infested levels in Doom and Quake 2 like Lee'Mon already mentioned, but that's where it should have stayed. It was never a welcomed sight on a server in Quake 2 for me since I refused to use it for fear I may call myself names. It's a lovely weapon and has always been just a thrill to use on the baddies in the games it was in. But now we're talking about multiplayer.

This gun should never have been in Quake III and that was my thought from the start. Sure it's fun to grab it in the "single player" part of Q3A and spam the bots to get through the level faster by scoring frags by the half dozens, but on a server with people? Nope.

So far the opinions have been that "everyone can get it" if it's on a server, but original spawns have a big mark on how the game can play out with a server full of worthy opponents. The gun can turn the tide of a game too quickly in my eyes. It should never be in a team game, serious or not, that would ruin the balance that's hard enough to put in a game in the first place. I do agree that you shouldn't bitch about it though and if you're in a FFA server where the BFG is in place...play it or split. As with most Quake related online issues, it's your money (game and connection), play it how you like it. You would see me leave a BFG server though.

Well that's it for us, and now it's your turn. Have thoughts you'd like to share on the BFG, send them to Feedback. If you'd like to start a whole new issue rocking in the next edition of Rants N' Raves, then mail us at Rants N' Raves. If you have nothing to say, I don't believe you, so get writing ya big fibber!
