Splash Damage Bug
So it's not realistic, but it's fun, should it stay?
  — by Pappy-R and the Gang

I said dance, baby!

Hear ye, hear ye! It's time for another round of Rants n'Raves where you get to shout or spout about whatever you want that has just a little to do with Quake(s), but there's that one little catch. We get to rip into your opinion, our own opinions, hell we've been known to just rip into random topics around here, so you know nothing's sacred to the PQ crew.

This week's piece is a rant by de:Raven who'll pull up his soap box to flail away madly. Ladies and gents...let's dance!

Splash damage through floors. It's a lot of fun.

Okay, maybe it's not as much fun from the receiving end of things, but I defy anyone to kill someone from the floor below, see the "You fragged..." text and not chuckle at least a little, knowing that even though you can't see it, someone up there is mightily upset.

In Rocket Arena, such splash damage opens up whole new possibilities in the realm of tactics - high ground is no longer unassailable, if you can predict where on that platform the enemy is standing, forcing people away from camping and sniping (though how camping quite relates to a game where there are no pickups, who can say...)

But those days are soon to be gone - id, with their latest beta of the forthcoming point release, is set to remove this "bug" for good, claiming it was never meant to be present in the first place. But why?

If we look at the list of bugs that have issued forth from the hallowed halls of id in previous years, we can see many that have become part and parcel of the great Quake experience. Rocket jumping, strafe jumping, double jumps etc. all help to create a feeling of controlled movement that sets it apart from every other FPS in existence. It's these things that make it stand out, and set the men apart from the boys all over the world. These are the reasons I love Quake.

And none of them were ever fixed. In some cases they were even deliberately carried over to later games. So why is this "bug" a bug, and not a Quake quirk, like the others we love? And why, after almost a year of playing with it (learning to take advantage of it, learning to defend against it), have they only now decided to change it?

The instant this change makes it into the big wide world, whole swathes of maps are going to start playing differently, irrespective of what the authors intended. And since authors can bypass the bug anyway, with clip brushes, should they so desire, why should the playability of their maps be altered, even revoked in some cases? It's not "broken", so why fix it?

  — de:Raven

Pretty well said there de:Raven, no let's run this little treat past the panel to see what they have to say. I do have to post their thoughts, it's part of our therapy. Let's let Spyke have first whack at this one.

Ahem. AMEN BROTHER! If you'll recall, Lee'Mon and I did a Gauntlet on this precise topic, and I argued the exact same angle that Gavin here is arguing."Bugs" like this become a part of the game after a while, and "fixing" them mess it up. You didn't see id going and fixing rocket jumping, and when strafe jumping was taken out of Q3Test, John Carmack was nearly a victim of death by e-mail. Players need to learn to adapt to the circumstances of each game. While shooting through floors may not be what was intended by id, it's in there now, and people are taking advantage of it, and players are mindful of it. So let's just leave it alone, okay?

  — Spyke

I had a feeling Spyke would take that road, now before we offer up his partner in crime, Lee'Mon, let's let the lady speak. That means it's time to unleash the "Mistress of the Motherboards"...Love2Play. Take it away L2P, and be nice to the guy this time will ya?

For the first time, I agree with one of our readers! yaaahooo!

I agree that it seems to me more of a feature than a bug. For instance in Instagib or Beryllium you can even turn up the splash damage. So how is this a bug? And comparing it to the gravity settings? C'mon! When the gravity settings on a server are such that a player using a RocketJump launches himself into the next map, I would hardly compare splash damage to that as a bug.

I have found more and more Quake 3 players using Rocket Jump in the same irritating way Quake 2 players used the hook; CONSTANTLY. For gawd's sake man! stand and fight! If you are so bad that you can't face me a frag then get off the map! If your aim is so bad that you have to fly to shoot me, then give up lewser! Ok, wait....I'm starting a different rant now. I know, just like a woman.... But seriously, with splash damage being called a bug, what do you call the rest? Like Raven said, no way it's a bug of great concern.

  — Love2Play

Next up, more PQ opinions, including Pappy himself...
