Splash Damage Bug
So it's not realistic, but it's fun, should it stay?

Holy mother of pearl!! She agreed with the rant? Knock me down and call me fluffy, I really didn't see that one coming. That's it! You have all forced me into using our own ultimate ranting machine, Lee'Mon the horrible! OK, how about "Lee"Mon the not always quite as nice to all the people kinda guy"? Well...whatever, go Lee go!
Excuse me for a moment. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! Thanks. I think I can continue.
I've had enough of this silly little talk about splash damage through floors being a "valid tactic." I'm sorry, but it's gone on long enough. The change is being made. id Software made Quake3, not you, and they have the final word in what changes are implemented. 1,500 whining 'l33t' wanna-be pros complaining it was removed is less important than 15,000 "lesser" players complaining that it's there, particularly when the majority has the same opinion as id. It's about time that this very small but EXTREMELY LOUD minority of Quake players learned that playing a lot of Q3A, or attempting to play professionally, or making mods, does NOT mean your input comes before all others. Go to Florida, which seems to be the only current place on earth where whining "It's not fair!" will actually get you anything.
WhOOp! Conflict plain and simple. I love a good old fashioned disagreement. As always, thanks for the restraint Lee'Mon. OK we have nobody left here to..what? Oh crud, Ash did show up. Well I guess I better include his bit then. I am still ticked that he's gone to a couple LAN events while I slaved here at PQ making sure the readers had what they need. But that's ok! I...oh, never mind. Here's Ash and his angle on the topic at hand.
Splash damage through floors is a subject that I've changed my opinion on a bit. Originally I didn't care much whether or not it was in the game, because I figure that if it's there, I'll use it... and if it's not, I won't. I didn't see it as much of an important facet of the game, and so I was wondering why bother fixing it. In fact, with maps like q3tourney4, I enjoyed the strategy that it created on the map. While it was strange to get thumped through the floor on a realism standpoint, it wasn't like everyone couldn't tell the walkways were thin as hell... so you were bound to get popped and figure it out really quick.
However, I've been playing a ton of Rocket Arena 3: Clan Arena, and I've decided that I cannot wait until the bug is gone. There are quite a few spots on the rocket arena maps where the floors are thin, but it's impossible to tell. (Well, not impossible, but it's far from obvious.) When I'm killed by someone that didn't even know I was on the floor, but just shot a thin spot because they knew the spot was thin, I don't consider that fun at all. At least on tourney4 and dm13 it's a matter of knowing exactly where the opponent is and then exercising your mad skillz by shooting them without even looking. But when you expand that out to all the maps out there, there aren't always perfect skillful examples, pretty soon it becomes obvious how much of a bug it is when it becomes "blind lottery" shots and "spontaneous free kills", instead of another cool way to show your player tracking skills.
So I totally agree with Raven in part, that it can add something interesting and sometimes fun to the game. However, more and more often, it becomes an illogical luck kill that just shouldn't have happened. I personally can't wait for 1.25 final (and the version of Rocket Arena 3 to go with it.)
And now it's up to me to break the tie. To be the voice of reason in a wilderness of misunderstanding. To be a beacon to all those who... (is anyone buying this load?) OK last stab is mine so here goes.
First I'd like to say that play whatever I'm given. If I like the game I play it, and if I don't, I move on. You can safely assume that I like all three Quakes. They have indeed each come with their own special little quirks, and if they're in there, I'll use them. If they're not, I won't bitch. I was actually OK with the damage through floors angle and it was after I enjoyed the feature that I found out it was indeed a bug. I thought and hoped it was a feature that could be used by map creators to add spice to their creations. I was wrong.
It's a bug and it's gone. Cya, buh bye. I will miss it though and I have to say that almost a year is a rather long time to live with the quirk and have it removed. If it wasn't for the odd occurrence of id Software making the game's mission pack, I think the bug may have lasted. I can't be sure of that though since they could have held off on the fix for the new Team Arena compatible code. It is indeed gone and bitching about it won't matter because, as Lee'Mon mentioned, id makes the game and you like what they have or you move on. Either way, the game still rocks and I'll get used to it. That's what it boils down to really. Getting used to it.
That's that and I really liked doing this particular rant since we had a nice varied response from the crew. Now it's of course your turn and you can let us know how you feel about this topic by sending in your feedback. Or you can hope to inspire a whole new Rants n'Raves with your own issue of importance. Either way, let us have it.
