Talkin' about TA's success.
by Pappy-R and the PQ Perps
This week's rant from Xer actually covers a lot of ground for a short rant, and it includes several topics. Why is the online play for the Team Arena mission pack so low in numbers? Why is the pack a retail item and not a free download. Did the maps make the pack worth paying for? Let's cut into these with "Q3:TA What is Going On?" by Xer.
('lo there, here's my rant about the complaints I've heard in the PlanetQuake Forums, that I think are waaaay out of wack.)
Now i suppose you could add this to feedback of your ID-bashing.But what im really annoyed/upset about is TA.
im not going to bitch about the power-ups and how they unbalance CTf (which they do btw).Im gonna go on about the duel maps in q3:TA.
I just gotta say they are prolly the best designed maps ive seen in Q3 since q3 :D.
There's no T4 type maps, were theres only 1 armour, and if u dont time it right u cant get back into the game.
Have you seen how well designed the duel maps are?No RA, only YA,perfect weapon placement (bar the NG and RL being so close together on temple of pain).yet there is a lack of server's running duel maps for TA (theres a lack of servers for TA!).Perhaps TA would have been more of a success,if it had been a free DL (perhaps just a point release?).It would have lengthed the longetivity of Q3, especially in the 1 on 1 department.
The sad thing is noone is really gonna get to play these maps, even at lan competitions,as they arent part of Q3,there q3:TA.
And they _ARE_ the best maps ive seen for q3 so far.
not really a rant really, just a plea for more TA 1 on 1 servers!!!!!!!!
I can see by the size of the mails I got back, the PQ people have some thoughts to share as well on this topic. Let's give first shot to Hellchick, 'cause I know where she stands on this one.
Oh ho ho...the fan girl in me rises!
I agree, M5TTST3R: you can't bitch about buggy releases and in the next breath tell id Software to hurry the hell up.
I'm in a unique position to answer this particular Rant. During my time as PQ's Site Director, I was able to form a nice relationship with id Software. At the same time, I got to know a few of the guys there, and now I can call a couple of them friends. I've been there a few times and been able to see an average day of work in the life of id. And let me tell you, it's not sitting around on their asses and driving around in Ferraris.
People who think that the guys at id don't work are vastly mistaken. Many of them put in incredibly long hours, sacrificing time with their families to make a game for you to play. Especially during point release testing, these guys don't even go home til almost midnight most of the time. Not everyone at id drives a Ferrari, by the way. In fact, I'm pretty sure only Carmack does.
id Software isn't perfect, just as any developer isn't. They often have conflicting ideas about how to do something things and disagree with their fans. I and a lot of other people, for instance, didn't agree with the way they chose to do the team scoring in Team Arena. But instead of bashing id without any knowledge about what kind of work they really do, maybe those who are angry should instead be quiet and use their wallets to show their feelings -- don't buy their games.
Thanks 'Chicker, if you're keeping track at home, that's one "for" the rant. Next is our very own Content Manager, Ash to see if he likes the company that makes his favourite game. (hint!)
Betting is closed, read on.
I think that the problem is that somewhere along the lines recently, it became trendy and fashionable to be negative. And it's especially true in remarks towards software companies. It seems like now days any kid (or big kid) that has figured out how to do code "Hello World" in C is convinced that they have creative license to bash game developers like id, (or many other software companies in and outside of the gaming industry). No don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that id is infalable... but come on! No one is!
When a person finds those pesky issues with software, especially with Quake, there's a realization that needs to take place. The programmers, artists, designers, and staff are the very best at what they do, and the product that we are enjoying today is just as much a product of their design decisions and insight as it is a product of id's phenomenal talent.
To be more stern if some whiners have a pet peeve bug or issue, tough stuff. They need to realize that there were a zillion other things more important that were taken care of, and we have an absolutely fantastic game as a result of that. If you aren't satisfied with the game, then don't play it. M4TT5T3R is right on the money, id is an incredibly talented and professionally skilled group of people. And after all, it only took somewhere around eighteen months to make this masterpiece! If the whiners out there want a perfect piece of software, I really really really encourage them to write one. I bet someone else will find something wrong with it.
I do believe Ash got excited there at the end, you can just feel it. That's two "for" and none against going into Love2Play's reaction to the Rant. Being a forum moderator, I bet she's heard most of the "id flames" around and wouldn't mind a chance to go off about it.
Next up, more PQ opinions, including Pappy himself...
