CounterStrike CPL
The CPL drops Quake 3, but do we owe the CPL anything?
  — by Pappy-R and The Crew

I was very suprised with the drop of Quake 3: Arena in favor of Counterstrike in CPL events... for a couple minutes at least, until I thought it over.

The truth of the matter is, the CPL isn't about the gamers, or the games, or the competition. The CPL is about running a league. There's nothing any of us Quake fans can say or do that can compare to the droves of CS fans and players to the eyes of a corporate entity like the CPL. When it comes to running a league, you need sponsors and money. Nothing can change the fact that more people play CS, and that means more impressions for sponsors, and more competitors and spectators.

It saddens me that one of the most skillful games in existance is being dropped from just about the only successful gaming league out there. But business is business, and if a modification that was taken commercial isn't a sign of the gaming business to come... then a league blindly picking it up as it's primary game certainly should be.

It's too bad.

Now he's saddened and that can't be good. Next thing you know, Ash will be calling in sick 'cause he's so depressed over the whole thing. Then I blame you Angel, yes it's all your fault! Ok, I feel a bit better, now lets hand the mic over to the "mistress of the motherboard", Love2Play for a bit of the old Rn'R.

100% agreement to everything you said Phoenix.

First off "the nerve!" to think that the Quake Community owes anything to CPL is ludicrous. No Community owes anyone anything, The gaming communities at large are full of gamers who PAY for what they are doing. We buy our games and our computers and spend our lives upgrading. We spend our hard earned pennies to be told we "owe" some website something? The Quake community only owes id software a big thanks for making such awesome games.

And as for dropping Quake 3 in favor of CounterStrike once again I have to roll my eyes. It's all about $$$. Counter Strike appeals to more teens for the realism of being able to shoot people than the artistry and science fiction surrounding Quake. Therefore there are more Counter Strike/Half-Life players than Quake 3 players. And CPL wants to make room for what game is likely to bring them more people. What's interesting though is what they don't realize is the quality vs quantity theory. This may twist a lot of hairs but you can take 5000 Counter Strike players and once you eliminate the ones not old enough to own a credit card and the rest who warezed the game instead of having actually bought it in a store, you are left with less people than you would have after that elimination process in Quake 3. Quake 3 has Quality of players vs Counter Strike's Quantity.

So CPL may have more players now but, no offense Counter Strike, you can have em!

Right, left, jab, jab ...boom! This issue is getting the high hard one from the crew who are singing right along with Phoenix, our ranter of the week. MY turn to dive in, and I'll see if I can't use a different point or two since they stole all the good ones.

Lemme get the easy one out of the way first. The CPL is a business and is monitarily motivated, fact. That is far from a bad thing, fact. The customer owing the business/retailer/party making profit anything is absurd. That was a dumb thing to say in my eyes.

As for the change itself from Quake III to CS, I have no problem with some of the statements, but they don't really match the circumstances. The idea of the CPL "expanding its horizons beyond Quake 3" by simply switching one game for another is not an expansion. Especially when the new game is much more limited in what you can do with it in tournament play. That would be less, where as "expansion" would be more. I could definately see expanding the games. That would be a good thing.

The new setup is the result of the new sponsor, so this is gonna be good...very good. The online numbers for CS are great. Hell they're number one, but what you're wind up with live is gonna be a real treat. It's all about the money. Just say it with a smile.

Will the world care who wins? Will legends be made? Wake me when it's QuakeCon!

And just what the hell do you think about all this? Shout it out!
