Female Gamers
Female players get the boot from sexist males?
  — by Pappy-R and The Gang

Before I got involved with GameSpy and PlanetQuake, I used to see this a LOT. I've always used Hellchick as my nick, so it was pretty obvious that I'm female. I too have had people leave the server when playing, saying that they're not going to get beaten by a girl. I've also been called some pretty nasty names just for fragging people.

I've never been sure why some male players feel threatened by a female player, and it often doesn't even matter if the female is a good player or not -- just the fact that they're on the server is enough sometimes to provoke insult. Back when I first started playing there was a lot of this; now that I think there are more women in the scene, I had hoped it would decrease. Apparently it hasn't gone away completely if you're still seeing a lot of it.

On all-female tournaments: I've caught some flak for my opinions on all-female anything in the past. The bottom line for me is that I'd much rather see a tournament that encourages women to participate alongside the men rather than further segregating them into a tournament of their own. If the idea is to get everyone together so we're all one big happy fragging family, then why don't we do that straight off? I'm not saying that no one should form any all-female anything, but I do think that at some point it creates more harm than good. I used to be in an all-female clan and I was even in an all-female competition. There were some great aspects to this that I didn't find elsewhere -- a different kind of cameraderie where it can be really fun to just play with the girls (women look at competition differently, I think, and see it as something more fun than hardcore). It would be nice to see these filter into the rest of the community rather than being segregated into all-female anything.

So there needs to be a balance; get the girls and the guys playing together somehow. And let's hope it helps take away the insults, too.

Ah yes, balance. The zen of Quake is balance and harmony, which can only be truly attained with the removal of lamers! Get'em outta here! Now since Will had connection issues and couldn't respond to this weeks topic, it's my turn a little quicker than normal. I'm all guy, and don't plan on speaking for women, but I do have some ideas on the topic.

Since Quake 1 and playing online and in clans, I thought women in gaming was pretty cool. First it was a novelty since so few did it, and even fewer were known female gamers. Then as the numbers increased, so did the lame ass little brainwaves that decided insulting a woman was kool. A woman handing you your ass is not a bad thing. It's a game and you're gonna lose sometimes anyways so it really doesn't matter who hands you your ass does it. Well I guess it matters to little twits who have such an identity crisis, they can't even say why they don't want a girl kicking them around a server. "I'm not gonna get beat by a girl" is by far one of the most ass backwards statements I've ever heard. I think any female gamers out there that run into this kind of emotionally challenged individual should thank them for making their views so clear, and remind that player their mommy is calling them.

On the issue of female clans, I can see this as an result of the bad attitude on the servers from the "male(?)" sector. It seems to me to be a way they can just play and be without the idiots, although it does segregate them and defeat the integration concept. I think it's a harmless issue myself.

The all female tournies however, I just can't watch. I hear the female gamers calling for less BS, more acceptance, and then some major tourny has an all female tournament? That's so wrong to me. I see it as the sponsors using the women as an oddity to attract attention. It does more to segregate female and male gamers than anything else and I'm convinced that as long as this goes on, so will the anit-female idiots on the servers. I doubt the butt heads will ever completely vanish from the scene, but we've gotta make a start by removing any and all walls that stand in the way.
