Where has our community gone?
by Pappy-R and the PQ Pak
Is a lack of "caring" community really what's diminished the online roll or is it merely age? The way things happen on the servers is a big part of the game, so yeah it matters, now let's see what our esteemed panel of commentators has to say on the subject. BTW, the "esteemed" part ends when you come to my POV. First up, the icey one, IceStorm.
To a point, I agree with Dekard. He makes the statement that he can control where he goes. True, he can. But I'm not the kind that's willing to just give in. If I can control a server, a forum, etc. I will "school" those fools that it's cool to have class. If they want to act like the immature children they are, I will continue to educate them. And I will beat some sense into them. But I'm not going to wuss out and run away. I'll laugh at them, and remember that I am the one in control. Not them.
But how and why does this continue? Simple explanation. Those in control of servers and forums are are more interested in gaining popularity instead of doing what's right. So they let them get away with it, in hopes of bringing in more people. Sadly this is true in most occasions. I personally frequent servers that have admins that take an active role in running their server. I dislike servers that have no control. So, like Dekard I don't go there. But until server admin's pull their heads out of their rectum it isn't going to happen. So in turn, these admins are part of the problem as well.
Yes, it has gotten worse. But to a point. I call upon each one of you to expect more from yourself. Stand up for what's right, not just what's cool. If you can't control your actions and let your emotions control you, then I suggest you find a new hobby. This class act isn't for you.
Wisdom from Ice, now I've seen it all! Well, before I get myself any deeper with IceStorm (challenge?), let's hand it over to the mystical one...da Jube!
I have an extremely high tolerance level, but I think Dekard hit on a couple of key points. More gamers surely does mean more assholes, and the community is often too afraid to police itself for fear of being labeled "Forum Nazis", "IRC Nazis" and "Server Nazis". Thinking back to my clan days, teams got away with murder because the leagues had this whole 'freedom of speech' thing happening. Because of their belief that everyone should have the right to spew whatever filth came to mind, there were many times when clan matches were just not fun at all due to the disgusting and hateful comments made in IRC and on the server.
I really don't know why people feel that things not acceptable in every day life, ARE acceptable in online gaming. But on the flip side of the coin, there also a lot of truly great people out there, and they're the ones that make the experience worthwhile. When I first started playing Quake I was newbie beyond belief. There were a lot of jerks out there, but also a lot of people who really took the time to help me out. Once I graduated to Quake II, again there were always people more than willing to lend a hand with useful tips. For example, I'll never forget the person who encouraged me to start using a mouse. I actually believed that if I was crouching no one could shoot me!
After spending years in online gaming, I believe that Dekard has the right idea... stick to your own. People will continue to be afraid to police their servers, forums and IRC channels, because they don't want to lose their players and their hits. So spend your time playing the game you love with the people you enjoy. People with similar values to your own, people who will still take the time to help out a newbie in need, and people who do not sit and spew hate remarks just because they're hidden behind a keyboard.
See, now ya did it! She's gonna start passing out curses again and those are worse than any virus. There seems to be some agreement on the scienticly proven existance of assholes (DUH!) and a real trend in how to deal with them. Some modifications apply. Now let's talk to a madman about this for another outburst if we're lucky. I do love it when the crew gets excited!
Let's see, what was this rant about again? *reads it again* Ahh, right, right... people being assholes. Well, the problem with people in general is that the more people you have, the more assholes you have. You can do the math yourself, but I'm pretty sure you'll end up coming to the same conclusion. And, face it, there's a lot of people playing online nowadays. It can't be more than 2% of gamers that give everyone a bad name, but with the 4000-odd people online at any given time playing Q3 that's 80 servers that have been infected by racism, swearing, and stupidity in general. Unfortunately it's not a phenomenon that's limited to Quake, or even gaming in general. Hell, I've seen mind-boggling stupidity on Harvard forums. I could probably also work Counter-Strike into this argument somehow, or comment on the author's somewhat unusual brand of moral relativism, but that would be beyond the scope of this response.
Still, I'm not entirely sure what he's asking for here. If he's asking for the community's help in shouting down these idiots, I'm happy to help. If he's asking for censorship of forums, sure. We are't obligated to provide a forum for these idiots. Kick them off of IRC, ban them from your servers. Fine with me. Let's be intolerant of the intolerant! I still don't understand why he was arguing with himself a few times, though.
Well to clear up one fact, Dekard will, if forced, argue with himself (had to bud heh). Madman is in total agreement with our guest ranter on the basics and I'll have to agree myself on most points except for one. I am not responsible, except by example, for teaching manners to buttheads! It's not in my daily schedule of things to do and when it does jump into my day it ticks me off. Mail, IRC, GameSpy Arcade, forums and on the servers, I just walk away. I'll ban your butt if it's on something I'm responsible for, but other than that I think these idiots should be removed ASAP and ignored immediatly.
I don't get anywhere near the game time I'd like to just cruise servers and frag, so when I do it's usually a place I know with folks I frag with regularly. I'd have to say sticking to places you know and that are well monitored has become the way to go for many. Have the admins notified and all but don't communicate with buttheads and they'll soon be wondering if they've been muted somehow.
I caught my lovely wife actually arguing back with a moron on a server once. I mean that's time you're never gonna get back!
/me walks away shaking his head
