Responses to the 11-20-99 article, "Upgrading for Survival"
This week we are taking
time out for the mailbag. Thanks to all who wrote us and for the
great reviews. And for those who didn't like it, see me on a server
so I can send my RL where the sun don't shine!
We got some good tips
and some junk mail so enjoy!

Sound cards and increased fps
was in #gamespy on irc talking with one of the TeamGamespy beta
testers and this was the conversation we had:
Heh - I dumped my old AudioPCI card and switched to the
and gained like 20 fps in Q2
It was a bizzare thing to see the diff
I was thinking that the old card was probably either conflicting
or hogging resources
and the new card and drivers were made more efficient
Problem with the some cards is they either get superseded or
/ bought by other companies and your stuck with the last driver
Ever hear anyone complain about stuttering sound in Q2 in
all the time
usually Yamaha sound cards
cheap pieces of (edit text here)
Mine was an ESS Ensoniq chip set
Cheap is correct
They can grab cycles off the PCI bus and wreak all manner of havoc

Sound cards and increased fps
your Tech Tips article it says "Sound cards will not hamper the
speed of your game performance." ?????
have been fiddling with some computers and I found a MASSIVE performance
difference between an ISA and PCI sound cards. I find that a creative
LIVE even performs faster than say a PCI64 giving smoother gameplay.
a Sound Blaster AWE32, creative PCI 64, and a creative LIVE. In
an AMD K6/2 450 (333,350,400), VooDoo3 3000 (Righteous 3DFX, Voodoo2
12 Mb), 128 Mb (64,192SDram PC100). I found that replacing
an AWE32 with a creative LIVE is comparable to a memory upgrade
had to mention it ...... do I get anything ?
I agree with the ISA to PCI move ( do they make ISA cards anymore?
j/k), I have some question of what exactly creates the improvement
when you are comparing a PCI64 to a Live! card. Is it the
piece of hardware that allows the system to have more resources
available, does it actually relieve system memory? Or is
it the new and improved drivers that no longer hog all your system
resources? And would the price difference make it worth
it? Hmmmm. The point of both J/ Kaye and Haz is this:
quality matters! And yes, you get the leftover turkey
that sat out for 2 hours on my table and the sofa cushioned flattened
by the men watching football and experiencing gaseous moments
on Thanksgiving Day!
the goods but still laggin?........
Is it my internet connection?
have an ati allinwonder pro 8mg vid card-
RECENTLY BOUGHT 2---VOODOO 2-1000 cards !!!! I hooked one to my
ATI and my fps went from approx 30 to around 70+ Then using
SLI mode I added the second card and my fps jumped to between
90+ a high of 147 People can`t sneak upon me any more---but---why
do some people still move faster than I do? Is it their internet
what looks like the perfect setup. Excellent fps using those
SLI voodoo2's. Most of the time when you have a fast machine
there are tworeasons why the other guy moves faster: One, he has
a faster more stable connection; two, you have not tweaked your
Quake 2 for that lovely screamin' machine. For the ISP problem,
refer back to our previous articles for modem tweaks and ISP problems.
For your Quake 2 tweaks...... muwahahahaha! Guess what our
article next week is? That's right! Tweaks for Quake
2!!! So come on back and get ready to kick some grunt booty.
Banshee & GLQuake too dark
I recently got a Monster Fusion card from a friend (PCI, 16meg).
It's installed correctly and everything seems to be working. Even
the 3Dfx OpenGL
is working fine. The only problem is my brightness.
know I'm supposed to be using te 3Dfx setting and it is working
to an extent. The only problem is the brightness.
you know what might be the problem??? If so... Please, please
let me know. This game rules and I'd like to be able to see more
of it. hehe
and many other cards, the simplest way to cure brightness problems
It lets you set your brightness for the game and uses practically
no resources at all. A very small, unintrusive program.
Can't get GLQuake running.........
cant get Glquake running - it asks for glide2x.dll(required file
missing), I assume as this is a 3dfx related file and I have an
Nvidea riva tnt2 that im stuffed! I would appreciate a definetive
the file opengl32.dll from windows\system to your quake folder.
Overwrite the one there. The opengl32.dll file
with Quake is too old - you need to replace it with the new one.
Many people say, "just delete the opengl32.dll in the quake folder,
it will find the other one you have." I personally don't
feel comfortable leaving it to the program to find the driver,
would rather get it myself and make sure it's got the right one.
For 3dfx card users, copy the 3dfxgl.dll or 3dfxogl.dll file from
windows\system to your Quake folder and rename it opengl32.dll
That will give you the same cure for Quake, GLQuake and Quakeworld
