Tech Tips Mailbag

This is where your gaming and hardware needs are met. Be all that you can be or get out of the game! This won't be a forum for techno-geeks to find more ways to impress their non-technical friends, it's for plain folk who need help to better their gaming experience. But don't blame us if you blow your machine sky high; we're offering tips, not the Bible on computers. The mailbag is alive and well - send in those questions to TechTips. !

Tips from Readers

Subject: Motherboard Updates

In as much as you have helped me, here are a few things that have really got my machine rocking that you may be able to pass on to others. To begin with I have an AMD K6/3 450 running on an ASUS P5A with 256 Megs and a Diamond Viper TNT2 Ultra. I'm running two hard drives on the primary master/slave and A CD Burner and cd-rom on the secondary respectively. Yep, the latest Detonator drivers(365) for the Viper. The ASUS board uses the ALI V chipset by Acer Labs. In combination with the Super 7 processor it requires Bus Mastering software to get optimal performance as well as an AGP driver. The Win98 bus master would never give me the secondary IDE controller hence no CD drives. Just getting the cd-burner to operate was a real bitch kitty. I went to www.ali.com.tw and got their latest AGP(1.65) and IDE(3.55) drivers. There is also a slick little AGP utility(autil03.zip) up there to control the bus within Windows. The U.S. site ( www.acerlabs.com ) didn't have these when I went looking. My point (yes, I have one) is that these drivers solved a multitude of problems (unexplained lockups and poor video performance) and greatly smoothed out Q3Arena as well as just got it "plumb purdy" as we say here in Texas. I have found that the chipset drivers and firmware have a huge effect on system performance when coupled with the latest video drivers. I hope this may be of use to you in helping others.

Sincerely, Bill Hastings aka Shadow Cat

Another point made in the "get the latest information about your motherboard" story. It really can improve the performance of your peripherals by updating your motherboard drivers.

Subject: Q3 and Voodoo3 3500TV

Well, after 3 re-installs of my V3-3500TV drivers, some head-scratching, shrugging, cussing, and re-install of my opengl drivers I managed to find the cause of my "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem" startup woes in Q3. For some odd reason Quicken2k startup loader, much like MSoffice's "startup" program which does diddely save it's supposed to make it start faster, also has the 'feature' of interfering with Q3's ability to load opengl. As to the exact reasons behind this I can only specilate, as it is not a CAD application or such...be that as it may, the memory resident program it loads "qwdlls" causes this problem. If someone else has this setup, Q3 and Quicken2k installed, they may want to either remove the entry from the startup folder, and/or just cntrl-alt-del once and scroll down the list and end the task.

Considering ID's lack of contact information, and the less than helpful FAQ entry on this error, I felt I'd let whomever is here know about this little problem, as I'm fairly certain quite a few others have/will have this same problem. Also, the "qwdlls" program while running makes it impossible to change resolution or colordepth within win98se itself (probably do the same with any other win9x version, but might be specific, *shrug*).

Sid "Yasha" C.

That is an excellent tip! I always knew that MS Office put that ever-so-irritating fndfst in the start up, which usually prevents Quake 2 from starting and hogs most of your resources, but hadn't heard about Quicken2K being such a pain.

Thanks for that tip!

Quake III Arena

And from our Forum, some Quake III help

Skin Installation:

Extract the .pk3 files from the download zip and put them in the baseq3 folder. If you are unable to see the model in the player setup in Q3A then create a model folder for the model in baseq3\models\players.

For example, for Harley Quinn, create the following folder: baseq3\models\players\Harley

To determine what the name of the model folder should be, open the .pk3 file (with winzip) and look at the path names for the files contained therein. Note that the model folder will be empty when you are done. In other words, don't extract the files from the .pk3 file into the model folder. For whatever reason, some model folders must exist, even though they will be empty.

For those of you unfamiliar with Winzip: download Winzip and install it. Then, in Windows Explorer go to View>Folder Options>File Types tab. Scroll down and look for pak3 file. If it isn't there, choose New Type. Fill in the association extension with .pak3 Under Actions, choose New. Then under Action type: open and in Application used to perform action type: C:\PROGRA~1\WINZIP\winzip32.exe "%1" (if you installed winzip on C: drive) Now your Quake III pak3 file will open with Winzip.

Alternately, Borderfield's Q3A Total Control has a pak3 explorer built-in. Check it out!

Running a mod:

Right click on your desktop and select New>Shortcut. Use the browse button to locate the quake3.exe program in your quake3 install folder. Highlight it and select Open. Click Next and give it an appropriate name, then click Finish.

Now on your desktop should be your new shortcut. Right click it and select Properties, then the Shortcut tab. In the field "target:", you should see the quake3.exe program prefaced with the install folder, all surrounded by double quotes. Add any required information after the second double quote, but with a space between the double quote and your additional information. The resulting target will look something like what Dekard posted for you. For the specific case of the barrymore mod, it will look something like this:

"c:\Quake3\quake3.exe" +set fs_game barrymore

Make sure you install the Barrymore mod in c:\quake3\barrymore (where c:\quake3 is your Q3A install folder). And read the readme.txt file in the zip folder to make sure that there isn't something else that should go in the target field.

Serious timedemo

Barrysworld has a timedemo to push your Quake III fps to the limit. It's the equivalent to the Crusher demo for Quake 2. So if you want to really gloat over your fps or suffer total humiliation, then pick up bwmega.zip.

Site p1mp worth noting for Quake III Arena server setup

Antibotics

This site not only covers the elimination of bots anymore. While it used to be mainly for the purpose of server admins to prevent cheating, it has gone above and beyond what we hoped for and now offers guides to setting up your server.

And not just for Quake III Arena, but for all the Quake games ! We would like to thank Dekard for gathering some of the best guides from the best authors to help the gaming community get online!

So go take a look at Antibotics if you want to know how to setup your Quake server.
