Subject: Q3 downloading

Hey, I have tried everything I can think of to get my q3server to send maps and models to people that connect to my server with no avail.I have tried set sv_allowdownload 1 but that doesn't work.I even tried moving files to different dirs to see if that would help. Q2 sent maps,models,you name it with no problem.Can you give me any help on how to do this or cant it even be done in q3??

Does the map download in Q3 work? Any word from the masters at planetquake? Sierra tech told me to type in "/sv_allowdownload 1", which I did but no maps are downloading. If anybody would know, I figured the PlanetQuake staff would.

Here is yet another unhappy moment in Quake III land. There is no autodownload in Quake III and all indication have been that there never will be. Personal opinion? It sucks! Once Quake III is as big as Quake 2, how in hell are we going to locate all the maps, skins, etc... for all the mods that will come out? My Lithium Quake 2 maps folder is 233MB of maps. My skins are 87.7MB. Of course Planetquake will try to make it easy on all of us by offering the best resource for Quake III but once you enter a game, isn't it just easier to allow the download and get on with the game?! Thanks id <sarcasm>. Might I suggest we all request this feature be added to the next point release? I was told by Activision that id had no intention of allowing us to disable freelook and that story changed, so perhaps we can convince them to allow downloads?

Subject: Recording a demo

I tried several times to record some awesome demos for Q3 Arena. But, unfortunately I could'nt record anything. When typing "/record filename" in the console, I get the error massage that "client/server must have set ...". Im not home right know, so I cant check for the exact words, but I think you know what he problem might be. Id be glad if you could mention a solution.

What the error message said is correct. And this occurs on that haunting pure server issue. The server you join needs to have the line set g_syncronousClients 1 in its config. If they don't, you don't record a demo. Add that line to your own config and you can record demos in single player.

Subject: Good News

Just wanted to let you know that I used your default q3 config to add 20fps to my game - under Linux. Using the absolute default config I could (I had to turn down the sound... the wife was napping), and the id supplied Mesa I was able to get 35.8 fps on demo001 for the first and second run after starting the game. I quit the game, started it back up, ran the techtips.cfg, and got 58.3 on the first run and 57.7 for the second run. No other changes were made. I then went back and made some changes (each changing a setting you had in your config), and ran the 2 timdemos again, getting 52.6 fps on each.

Voodoo3-2000 AGP
3com 3c905b NIC
ISA AWE32 Sound
ISA 56k modem (Jaton Communicator II)

Now THAT'S what we wanted to hear!! However, change that ISA soundcard for a PCI and gain another 5-10fps guaranteed.

Subject: Quake 2 Rocket Arena performance

Hello I need your HELP ok .... let me explain my computer..

CPU= pentium 266
3Dcard= Voodoo2

(ooooh, too many details! not)

ok now ... when I turn on quake2 and go in to 'join network' and go in to the Deathmatch serer straight away ... I get a beutiful FPS of 90-100 .... BUT when I go in to Rocket Arena I get below 60 and when lots of rockets are fired at the same time it goes slow ... and my friend doesn't seem to have this problem ... OK now ... this is the strangest thing ... If I turn on Quake2 then go in to Rocket Arena server and check my FPS it's 60 ... then from rocket arena if I connect to Death match server it's 60 !!!! but if I connect straight away to death match with out going in to rocket arena, I get 100 ! SO .... I thought maybe its some thing that LOADS when I turn on rocket arena that makes the FPS go to 60 ... maybe some file like .cfg ? so If I could get the FPS that I get in DM in RA I would kick ass but it gets slow in RA ..... so please help me I only got my V2 a week ago and I was hoping it to be faster... thank you for all your help ... I think it happens when I LOAD as I connect to rocket arena ... you know when it FLICKERS and then RA loads up ? after loading THAT ... FPS is always below 60 ... but if I go in to DM its 100 plz HELP me :::

First, I think it's incredible you get 90-100 fps on a Voodoo 2 on a P266! You must have something right in that config in Deathmatch. How are you checking your fps, timerefresh? The other thing to realize is that Rocket Arena also needs a config. Like we talked about in previous Techtips Quake 2 Configs , each mod needs a config. When you join a Rocket Arena server, it looks in your Rocket Arena folder for a config. There is most likely a default config in there that does not have any tweaks in it. Tweak it baybeeee!
