I have a couple of questions. I downloaded the Spitfire skin and noticed the very manly noises she makes. Is there anyway
to give her the same sounds as the Slash model? Secondly, I am in the process of learning Linux. I noticed your post about how you can port the Win9x version
of Q3A to Linux. My only question is, would there be a significant speed difference by doing so? Would there be an even greater speed difference if I
purchased the Linux Q3A? Thanks.
You can replace the sounds for the model by replacing them in her pk3 file. That would take repacking her pk3. But no one
else would hear it, only you.
I am not aware of a difference in speed from one version to the other of Win9x vs Linux Quake 3. I have both. I got the Linux
version on sale for $19.95 in the Tin! Keep your eyes open for that kind of deal. I also purchased the Linux version because being a newbie to Linux myself, I
wanted to make it easier ;-)
Subject: Benchmarking & RAM or video, which is best to upgrade?
I have a:-
AMD K6-2 500
64 MB 133MHz SDRAM (168pin)
S3 Trio64V2-DX/GX (775/785)
12Mb Voodoo II
ESS Audiodrive 1868 ISA Sound Card
And I was wondering how I could benchmark my computer in Q3Arena?
Also would adding another 64Mb of RAM give a large performance boost?
What would be the best video card to suit the AMD Processor? and will my old ISA ESS Audiodrive slow down my computer (should I buy a new one????)
Do a timedemo as shown in TechTips Quake III Arena Info & Resources.
Adding another 64 megs would be excellent and then using either a TNT2 or a Voodoo3 3000 would give great improvement at a
My suggestion for video card is TNT2 or voodoo3 3000. That is based on the overall speed of your system. You don't choose a
video card based on what brand CPU, you base it on the overall system. If you had more ram and a higher CPU, I would recommend a GeForce. But not at
this point and not with the fact you need more RAM. If budget weren't an issue, I would go more, more, more on everything :)
And yes, changing to a PCI sound card would improve your entire system performance.
Subject: Quake 2 and alt + tab
When I do the alt+tab command for quake2, the game just shuts off on me, and thats the same when I get a popup message or
something during a game, it just shuts off, it's a real pain to have to do that because you dont' know if you get an urgent icq message or whatever, then I
reconnect to the game and lost my entire score, please help me!
First, make sure in your config.cfg that the setting win_noalttab is set to 0. This allows for using alt+tab to switch
to windows. Set to 1 means you are not allowed to use that. Then make sure that alt and tab keys are not bound to anything else in the config.cfg.
Other than that, there are some video cards that have drivers that do not allow you to alt+tab out of the game. I believe
that it's usually the 3dfx cards. Although not confirmed that it is the card, but the drivers that actually cause the limitation.
