Subject: Make a list!

AI have this problem where when I adjust the volume for my computer, Quake 3 Arena dumps me back to the desktop. Then my desktop is very light colored and the resolution is wrong. I think knowing this might help:
I have a multimedia keyboard that can turn up the volume by turning a knob, there is no nobs on my speakers. So when I turn up the volume, there is an on-screen display of how much
I am turning my volume up. I also don't know why I can't run Quake 3 other than in full-screen. I don't want full screen but it always gives me full-screen.

Ok, my last problem is, how can I download maps when I am running Quake 3. When I play
Quake 2, and I don't have a map, it will download it for me so I can play it, in Quake 3 I can't even though I turned on automatic download. please help! Oh and my specifics are:
Intel Celeron 433 mhz
96mb of ram
Windows 98
Video Card: ATI Rage Pro Turbo 4x 8mb AGP

Wow!  Where to begin!

The on screen display is from the drivers of your keyboard and while it is using resources, it's necessary as you have no volume control on your speakers. It might be worth it though to get speakers with volume control and toss the keyboard drivers.  Otherwise, I suggest a pair of headphones with volume control.  I got mine for about $40 and they even have vibration for extra effects. Pretty cool if ya ask me!

The resolution can be from your monitor or your video drivers.  I would suspect more the video drivers because of the problem being more apparent when you return to your desktop.  It may be also a driver conflict between your video card drivers and sound or keyboard.  Try removing the keyboard drivers and see if the resolution problem stops.  If not, head over to Atitech and get the newest drivers for your card.  This is also most likely the reason you can't run in anything but full-screen.

As for the downloading of maps, Quake 3 does not allow it if the server has it turned off.  And most server do not allow downloading because it lags the server.  Best thing to do is to check FilePlanet or LvL for maps.

Did I get everything?  I hope so........

Subject: Quake 2 Server issues

Hello. Having recently acquired a new computer, a friend gave me Quake 2. That friend, myself, and others have begun to play deathmatch games via the internet. We usually have one fellow act as a server, and the others join that server. The guy who hosts the game has no lag, whilst, in the last game for example, i had a ping of around 439. This was frustrating. Can you tell me how this can be reduced? If you can I would be very greatful.

Yours Sincerely, Robert D.

My first concern would be what kind of connection you guys are using.  I hope it is more than 56k to run the server.  Next, I would be concerned if the one running the server is running a deathmatch server vs a dedicated server and playing on that machine, in that deathmatch game.  The power he is sucking out of the machine and the connection is tremendous.  He needs to not play on the same machine, let alone within the game itself.

The ideal situation is to have someone run a dedicated server from a machine no one is playing on.  Otherwise, you can just expect the pings to be between 300-500.

Subject: Q2 and a Banshee

I do not know if I am at the correct place, if not pleas sent it to someone who can help me

I have a mx 86251 voodoo rush screencard. The chipset says 3dfx but on some games 3dfx does not work but direct3d does. Now in q2 it works on 3dfx but after 10 mints it frees. What can I do to let q2 work with direct3d

First, all 3 Quakes do not, and never have run in D3D.  The run in OpenGL or software mode.  Except for Quake 3 Arena.  It requires OpenGL.  That is the plain truth.

Your card is a Banshee.  Most likely it needs the newest drivers.  I suggest the ones at 3DFX.
