Subject: Upgraded to lag

hi there,

i just upgraded my old PC (Pentium MMX 200mhz, 48 RAM, 33.6 Modem) to Pentium 3 600mhz, 64 RAM, 56 Modem. This is the problem:

with my old PC, I used to play Quake2 CTF a lot without problems, now ,with the Pentium 3, every time i try to connect to the servers i usually played, after 2 or 3 secs i get the "Disconnected Jackphone" image when in the menu (Join blue/red, chase cam, etc..) and cant move. I still receive the messages, though. Why is this happening? how can i fix that problem!?

i'm sending a screenshot with netgraph on so you can see it (i guess there's something wrong with the packets).

The problem is very simple.  You took your poor 56k connection which was very happy with your old computer, and you tripled the amount of information you are trying to send.  Put simply, you turned the water pressure up on the old garden hose when the old garden hose was happy with the water pressure the way it was.  What you need to do now is adjust the water pressure to suit the old garden hose again.

Tweaks, you need tweaks.  YOu will need to turn down a few of the perks that comes with having such a great computer if you want that same old 56k connection to do the job.  Otherwise order cable.

Take a look at our Quake 2 tweaks section and start making adjustments.  Also our modem tips and the links there in.

Subject: Quake 2 and Voodoo2

Hi, I have a 3dfx - Voodoo2 card that Quake II don't recognize. I can put the video switch to 3dfx, but I get a lot of "dots, multicolored dots (most blue ones), and it's not looking good.

The Quake III demo is not using 3dfx either.

When having the same problem with Need for Speed, I could start the game with a "Driver=voodoo2z" switch, Is there one like that, that I can use for Quake ? Or do you know what switch in my xxx-setup that I can turn so that every game knows that my system has a voodoo 2 card ?

Please help !

Tomas, the first thing you need to make sure of is that you have the very latest drivers for your Voodoo 2.  They are available at 3DFX  Especially Quake III will require the newest because of Directx7.  Your Voodoo drivers need to be Directx7 compatible.  Once that is in order, all other OpenGl games should fall into place.  

Make sure you are also not running off the 2D card that your Voodoo 2 is attached to. Sometimes people have a secondary card that is also capable of OpenGl that tries to run the game.  If your drivers for the Voodoo 2 are current, then you should be fine.

Subject: Awakening mods won't run new maps

A couple days ago I downloaded the Q2 Awakening mod through your mods section. I have been playing around with trying to get all my maps(including the my pak.file that came with it) to work. When I start a server right from the Quake2 it only lets me use the 9 ctf maps that I have. When I try to start form a command line and type "set map XXXXX" it doesn't do anything. I can get my maps to work by setting a deathmatch through eraser but I can't get bots and the textures get trippy. I have also tried making a maps directory and put it in D:/Quake2/awaken/maps. I don't know what else to try and I can't get the creator of this mod to reply. Can you help?

Take a look at our Quake 2 server setup guide.  In there we discuss the use of the maps.lst file.  There you set up what maps you want to run in the server rotation.  Then in your server.cfg you est the maps.lst file to be used.  

The server.cfg and maps.lst go in your Awakening mod folder.

Hi, i have quake3 arena, but i can't play any mods. When i try to run a mod, there apears a error on the bleu console (the console you see before running quake3). So, do i need a update ? and if so, where can i find the right update and what is its name.

Depending on the error (sharing that next time would be great :)  I would say your mods are not installed properly and you are getting the old "couldn't load default.cfg".  That means you missed.  Your mods need to go in folders within your Quake III Arena folder.  Such as:

c:\Quake III Arena\Beryllium

Don't forget to read the readme, they are really very useful little text files :)
