Winproxy Help (contribution)

Cyber Zilla was kind enough to send this in to all Quake 3 fans who use Winproxy what worked for him. Thanks!!!

After trying to find the answer to a Q3 problem I have been having for a while and not having any luck on the internet (even at my beloved PlanetQuake) I finally have the answer, and thought I would pass it on to anyone else who might need the same help. My problem was I couldn't get Quake3 to work thru my proxy program (WinProxy). It would work fine on the computer directly connected to the internet but not on another computer on my network needing the proxy server to connect to the internet. I knew it was possible if i could just figure how. Unreal Tournament worked automatically by the way, but that's not the game I wanted to play!
Yesterday I stumbled on some console commands that did the trick. To make a long story short here is what you got to do:

In WinProxy (version 3.0) make sure your using Socks 4 and 5 with the port set to 1080 (Under socks setup under File\Settings\Protocols\Socks setup). Make sure that the box is checked for socks too. My security settings are set at medium (second notch) but I think it will work one notch higher.

In Quake3 (ver 1.25 or 1.16) enter these commands at the console:
net_socksenabled 1 (enables or disables proxy/firewall. 1 enables 0 disables. requires restart of game)
net_socksport 1080 (set proxy firewall port)
net_socksServer (set proxy/firewall socks SERVER address) ... enter your socks server IP here (example 90.0.0.1)

[restart game]
Everything should work fine, though Q3 was having trouble finding the masterserver a couple of times (on the Proxy server machine as well as the client machine). I think this is a quirk in the new point release more than anything.
If you have trouble finding master server try a saved favorites server or enter an IP in manually...
Here is a (bad) picture of the connections window. The 'E-Screwed' connection under 'SOCKS 4 & 5' is the Q3 connection and the 'Zilla' connection is ICQ. I have no idea why the port is 27950 I thought it should be 27960

Subject: Video Problem

Hello there!
I am having troubles with installing my video cards.I have two Diamond monster cards and installed quakeIII,but now the game locks up and I have to restart the PC.
where did I go wrong? PLEASE HELP! (also I am not very computer literate).

First take a look at what your 2D card is.  make sure you have the latest drivers for that.  Second, what did you have in there before? If you removed it, did you remove all the drivers for it?  Third, look in the properties for your display adapter and make sure you have enabled SLI.

Subject: Dual Processors

I saw on a FAQ once the command to allow Q3 to utilize
dual processors. Can you tell me the command?
Thanks

This one is pretty easy, no long paragraphs needed.  First of all, the supporting system for this is WinNT. There is no guarantee that it will work with any other OS.  And all you need do is in the Quake 3 config (q3config.cfg) is make sure of the following:

seta r_smp 1

Yup, that's it!

Subject:Maxpackets and Snaps

Was wondering best settings for Maxpackets and Snaps....and all connection settings should be for DSL connect. For Q III.
Thanks

Maxpackets is a personal choice depending on the speed and reliability of your connection.  The Quake community uses the following as a rule, for their guideline.  Adjust it according to your own preference.

The default setting is 30, I personally never bother adjusting it. I focus more importantly on rate and FPS settings. Those are what really seem to make a difference. However, if you have a seriously unstable internet connection, maxpackets may help you win the fight against lag.

Snaps in my testing made absolutely no difference.  I found no improvement on 3 different machines when playing with the snaps settings.  I suggest leaving it alone.
