Tech Tips Mailbag

This is where your gaming and hardware needs are met. Be all that you can be or get out of the game! This won't be a forum for techno-geeks to find more ways to impress their non-technical friends, it's for plain folk who need help to better their gaming experience. But don't blame us if you blow your machine sky high; we're offering tips, not the Bible on computers. The mailbag is alive and well - send in those questions to TechTips. !

Quake 3 Arena Textures

I'll start by saying, this has already been asked. Maybe even a few times.
In fact here is one that almost helped.

Q: "Dude, my shaders are all fux0red and I'm getting nice white blocks
everywhere.
WTF ?"

A: Q3TA and Quake 1.27g are much more stringent on checking pak files now.
More than
likely what has happened is you have an older mod somewhere that is
replacing some
shaders in memory and you're getting all sorts of ugly looking graphics. My
recommendation is to just bite the bullet and install Q3A to a *NEW*
directory.
I can almost guarantee that if you reinstall Q3A, Install either TA or
1.27g, then
install the latest 1.27g compliant mods, most if not all of your graphics
wierdness
will go away.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

-Xian

I understand that and have reinstalled and repatched Q3A twice, In vinilla
Q3A everything works fine, I have no problems running any 3rd party
maps/models. My problems started when I installed Alliance 2.1 and RA3. Both
of which have been upgraded to run on version 1.27. I only get the pretty
grid cellings and fugly pollygon effects when attempting to play these mods.
No extra maps or modles have been placed in either mod directory so I can't
figure out what is being loaded that is causing a shader problem.
Any and all help with this would be so appriciated, because at this moment
I'm so frustrated that I have been forced to play Counter-Strike!
(Note to C.S. lovers: Not a bad game, but Quake owns jOO!!!)

Thanks, Mear|in

Hang on for a second, there's another one......

Subject: Strange Error

Hello everyone at planetquake,

Im having a problem. After updating my version of Q3A, after clicking on my Q3a icon, the program nerver entered the menu page. Strangely, while moving my mouse around on the blank screen I can hear the pointer pass over my menu choices. What's this mean? The latest version on the sys. is 117beta. In order to fix the prob. I updated to 1.27h for windows. Now the menus functioned. But wait. Now with this update, in RA, instead of the normal RA menu, it kicks me into the Q3a menu. On one occasion this error appeared:
Runtime Library
Error .....quake3.exe
R6017
-unexpected multiread lock error.
After that my settings on my desktop freaked out and then i rebooted.
So then I deleted pak4.pak3 reverted back to 117beta and now i'm back to square 1.
I need some help, I regret not knowing enough about how programs are written and how they function but I hope you can help me out and teach me a thing or two about this problem and how to update properly.

Thank you for your time,
Mark "Zookeeper [SWM]"

P.S. Not only did the program lock in Q3a but also in Team Arena and the recently acquired Qpong.
God forgive me, but I just thought of something else. If i may. While in the Q3RA server list, I have clicked on a few servers that, while loading said," Server uses protocol version 48" What is that? Thanks for all of your help, everyone in the quake family is creating a fantastic world for us to compete and play in. Many thanks

Ok, thought we would get 2 of the best examples of the main complaint going on right now about Quake 3 Arena and this new 1.27 thing. And Rocket Arena 3 seems to be most affected.

Simply put, you both need to start over and do it the right way. Here it is in order:

1. Delete it all. Save any custom maps you want to a temporary location and delete Quake 3 Arena and all subfolders.

2. Install Quake 3 Arena

3. Install the patches 1.27g and 1.27h

4. Confirm your success, join a 1.27 server.

5. Install Rocket Arena 3 1.0 and then 1.4. The files are called:
    ra310cl.exe
    ra3srvcl.exe

6. Install any 1.27 compatible mods. Remember NOT all mods have a 1.27 compatible version yet, make sure it does.

BIG thanks to TheRoachTGS for this outstanding line-up of the best way to ensure you install it clean.

Tip: Remember that your autoexec.cfg for performance improvement also works for Team Arena.
