Tech Tips

This is where your gaming and hardware needs are met. Be all that you can be or get out of the game! This won't be a forum for techno-geeks to find more ways to impress their non-technical friends, it's for plain folk who need help to better their gaming experience. But don't blame us if you blow your machine sky high; we're offering tips, not the Bible on computers. The mailbag is alive and well - send in those questions to TechTips. !

Server, server, server!

This time we received a lot of mail with questions about servers. In this world of broadband connectivity there are many of you wanting to run servers either just for the fact that you can, or for some of your buds to frag a bit at will.

As we tackle these questions I would like to remind all of you of a few simple facts:

1.  Cable or better is required. Ok, not by law but out of kindness to your fellow gamers. Forget running a server on 56k.
2.  Do NOT play on the same computer you are running the server on if you can help it. If you are running Windows and then the game (plus other programs no doubt in the background) when you yourself join the server you will suck the resources out of it.
3.  Test it out first. Nothing worse than joining a server of an amateur and having it shut down every 3 minutes. If you can, test out the map changes etc... in advance.

Now on with the questions!

Subject: Quake 2 Weapons of Destruction Server

help me!
im makeing a quake2 weapons of destruction serverand when i start the .bat file these messages pop up in seperate windows:
C:\Quake2>quake2 +set dedicate 1 +set game Weapons os destruction +exec server.cfg

(and)

Winsock Initialized
====== Quake2 Initialized ======

couldn't exec server.cfg

The first handy little thing you will find in your Weapons of Destruction folder is the Readme. It's a text file that tells you all about it. Including how to initialize a server. Specifically the command line for your batch file is:

c:\quake2\quake2 +set game weapons

That is the base setup. You can still add your +set dedicated 1 (notice the spelling) and +exec server.cfg

Next, did you make a server.cfg?  And where did you put it? And what is in it? There are some basics and you don't want it to be too big. It's really not necessary. Ironically, this too is included in the Weapons download.  Which brings us to another point; you did download the mod and install it as instructed in the readme also ?

Subject: Quake 2 server malfunction

Myself and a group of work mates have just started playing Q2. Until we are good enough to play with others, we all used to join up to my PC via the net. The problem is, that over the last couple of months, we have steadily found it more and more difficult to connect to each other, if not impossible!
Whoever hosted the game that night, would type in "winipcfg" and then icq the ip address to the others. We all have version 3.20, we can see each others game in our address book, but cannot join! We all only have modems (all 56k), and our service providers swear it is not them.
Any advice would be muchly appreciated!

Weedeater, Clan Nadoc

It pains me to begin with that you all are using your 56k's to run a server. Don't you have at least one friend with cable? I seriously doubt that all of your ISP's suddenly went bad. However there are ISP's that absolutely do not allow running a server. You might want to check. There are those that will actually shut off your service if they find out. It violates your agreement.

One sure fire way to test though is to run the server public and join using GameSpy3D.   You can password protect it so outsiders won't join but then you all can bring it up on 3D and try to join using that. It should alleviate the mystery.  Check again on our Quake 2 dedicated server setup to make sure you have it all in place.

Subject: Quake 3 Arena Instagib

hi...

i dont undrestand how yhe instagib mod works.
i have downloaded some maps...and they work fine, but i cant get the instagib mod to work?

happy 4 answer! =)

=0m3Ga=

To run a mod, you have to execute it from a command line. If you are running a server, you have to use a batch file. Or you can choose it from the Mod menu in the Quake 3 menu.  It really is easiest if you run it from the batch file using a server.cfg because it gives you total control.  And life just got a whole lot easier running your server from rcon using BQServer.  You can manage your server right from your web browser.

Once again, I will point out the readme here.  Instagib comes with a nice readme. In there is EXACTLY how to launch the mod. For example:

"Installation:
Place the instagib.pk3 file in a folder directly under your
quake3 folder -- i.e. c:\quake3\instagib\instagib.pk3

To start this mod, use the command line:
quake3 +set fs_game instagib "

Nice and simple. Spelled right out for you.
