Subject: Quake 3 Server help

Hello.

Recently, I have started playing Quake 3 at work with a bunch of co-workers. I
am the one who always starts the servers. I never set up a dedicated server,
as we only play on our lunch breaks.

My question is, how do I make the server switch levels after the frag limit is
reached? We keep having to play on the same level over and over, or I have to
restart the server on a new level each time we want to change. Isn't there a
better way to do that, in game, without having to quit the server each time? I
would love to be able to write a little script or something that I can copy
and paste into the console, or make my own config and somehow reference that
using the console. Do you think you could tell me how to write a script or a
config that would simply cycle say, through 3 different levels, then back to
the first level again? That would really help speed up our playing times, and
make the game play much more fun.

Hope you can help.

Thanks,
Andy

Too easy Andy. A few of ways to do it:

1.  use rcon and from your console change the maps at will (ok, not that great)
2.  at the bottom of your server.cfg place a map rotation. Make sure your server batch file has the first map in it. For example +map q3dm1 . The rotation look like this:

seta d1 "map q3dm2 ; set nextmap vstr d2"
seta d2 "map q3dm3 ; set nextmap vstr d3"
seta d3 "map q3dm4 ; set nextmap vstr d4"
seta d4 "map q3dm5 ; set nextmap vstr d5"

vstr d1

3.  You can make a mapslist.cfg and in the batch file you add +exec mapslist.cfg to start your rotation. Again, see above. That is what is in your mapslist.cfg file. Simply use Notepad to create your mapslist.cfg  file.

Note that you can also customize each map with fraglimit and timelimit by adding that in. So if you have a favorite map or one that is larger and needs a smaller fraglimit, customize. The line looks like this:

seta m1 "fraglimit 50; map q3dm6 ; set nextmap vstr m2"
seta m2 "fraglimit 50; map q3dm11 ; set nextmap vstr m3"
seta m3 "fraglimit 50; map q3dm13 ; set nextmap vstr m4"

vstr m1

Subject: Customizing Quake 3 play

I have played q3 over the net and find at times people have customized the
game/map. I mean that maybe there is just a rail gun, or maybe the rocker
launcher shoots 50 round instead of one. Can you guide me in the direction
to edit our game/maps for inhouse network play?

Thanks for any help you give
Glenn

You can see from above how to customize your map rotation. As for gameplay there are several mod choices you can use. My personal favorite is Beryllium. This has excellent choices for customizing. In fact that is Beryllium's main purpose. To allow the server admin to pick and choose what he wants in the game. So head on over and pick it up. It comes with sample configs and their website has easy to follow FAQ's.

One last not to those of you who are playing on servers.  There is NOTHING worse as a server admin than to have a group of gamers join with their rate set at the default 25000. It sucks the bandwidth from the entire server. So my strong advice is CAP YOUR RATE ! Stop joining servers with your rate at 25000. Lower it to about 7000.

Now use this to send those troubles and woes to TechTips!
