Tech Tips
This is where your gaming and hardware needs are met. Be all that you can be or get out of the game! This won't be a forum for techno-geeks to find more ways to impress their non-technical friends, it's for plain folk who need help to better their gaming experience. But don't blame us if you blow your machine sky high; we're offering tips, not the Bible on computers. The mailbag is alive and well - send in those questions to TechTips.

Quake 1 Server Setup

Quake 1

Probably the easiest of the Quakes to run a server for.  The reason being is that Quake 1 is old.  Let's remember it was designed before OpenGL, before PIII's and before we all had cable a DSL.  At the same time, perhaps not quite as customizable.  But that is where QuakeWorld came in.

The 1-2-3 method for starting a Quake server is to simply execute the game with Q95.bat, choose Multiplayer from the menu then choose New Game.  There you choose TCP/IP and write down the number of your IP address shown (you'll need this to tell your friends your IP address so they can connect). Then click OK to go to the menu and choose the settings you want in your game.

You can also find these options in the Multiplayer menu of WinQuake, GLQuake and QuakeWorld.  But these will be a "Listen server". Take a look and try it out.

Also notice in the New Game menu the available "Modem" and "Direct Connect" areas for those of you wanting to try to connect to each other in-house.

Dedicated Quake 1 server

First you need some files.  Hop on over to FilePlanet and pick up any server files, mods or maps you'd like to use.  Just take a peek in the Quake section for anything we mention here.

You can easily start a dedicated server by simply adding to the command line of your Quake executible.  For example take Q95.bat and add the line -dedicated 16 and you're on your way. But there won't be much to it.

The best way to go about a Quake 1 or QuakeWorld server is to setup a file system so you can customize.  Set up a new directory structure for your Quake folder as such:

We'll call the directory for a server "Online".  So you would create the subdirectory C:\Quake\Online.  Then for QuakeWorld make note that you can have skins so you'll make a skins folder and then you need a maps folder.  Looking like this then:

C:\Quake\Online\skins
C:\Quake\Online\maps

Place the pak files for your mods in the Online subdirectory, you'll be executing them from in there.  And any skins for QuakeWorld or maps you want to use.

Another download you may want is Winded.exe.  This is a Windows dedicated server executable. Just add to your command line -dedicatede 16.  Do this by making a shortcut to Winded.exe on your desktop, right click on it and choose Properties.  Then add -dedicated 16 to the Target line.

To set up your dedicated server with special features, create an autoexec.cfg.  Open Notepad and use the following items of your choice:

hostname "Your Server Name Here"
deathmatch 3
maxclients 8
fraglimit 30
noexit 2
teamplay 0
timelimit 10
map start

Save it as autoexec.cfg and place it in your Online folder. For more commands that are possible, once again we refer you to the best list on the Net; Console.
