Common Quake Errors and their Solutions
It's high time we made
a list. There are some errors that just are not patch-able and these are teh errors that we will probably see for years to come on our beloved Quakes. So
here we attempt to list what most gamers commonly run into either at the start of their gaming career, or somewhere down the road. Pick your favorite and
see where it went wrong and how to fix it.
Quake III Arena
Re-enter cd key
This bad-boy has come up more recently. This may be a patch-able item. but in case
it isn't let's address it here. The main reason this comes up believe it or not is that you don't have the map or the right files for the
server. And even further, have never joined that mod-even if it's server side and have autodownload off.
Ok, more info. I recently ran into this attempting to join an OSP/Instagib server. I had
not joined an OSP server on the 1.27 point release yet and therefore had no OSP folder in my Quake 3 directory. With autodownload off, the server was
unable to communicate with my Quake 3 directory. It apparently needs to "check-in" and set up my q3config.cfg in the newly created osp
folder. So, I was dumped to Re-enter your cd key. Very irritating when you have been playing the game since it came out. And
naturally, my cdkey is perfectly intact. After entering my cdkey I returned to GameSpy3D and attempted to join again. This time with no
message I was simply dumped back to the main menu after the players loaded.
I went into my q3config.cfg in baseq3 and set autodownload to 1 and went to the same
server and what do you know!? I joined after a brief pause while this mod apparently set up it's folder and a q3config.cfg and a new q3key
In a nutshell, you don't have the mod, the map or need to enable autodownload to let the
server set up it's little folder.
Couldn't load default.cfg This one is easy. You need the
maximum install of your cdrom or the game can't load. This is for online play. It works fine offline because you need the cd in to play. But when
you go online, it can't find it. If you don't have the space for a maximum install, here is what you do:
Add this line to your command line of your Quake3.exe: +set fs_cdpath D:\Quake3\
Where D is the letter of the cdrom drive with the quake3 CD in it.
not open OpenGL_Subsytem. Drivers, drivers, drivers!
How many times can we tell you to update your drivers? Ok,
we'll keep telling you anyway.
make sure you have the most current drivers. While Glsetup
is a pretty handy utility, it does not clear out your old
drivers, nor does it necessarily find the absolute latest drivers.
You may still have a problem because the old drivers are still
there. If you have used Glsetup and are still having problems
then check Reactor
Critical for the most up-to-date drivers for most cards.
And for Voodoo users, take a look at the minigl driver (3dfxgl.dll)
Voodoo 2 users should be using version 1.47, Voodoo 3 users
version 1.48. Or for either card, the WickedGL driver from
you have the latest drivers and are having problems, it may
be a bad install. Remember what we talked about in Upgrading
for Survival. Remove all the old drivers first, then boot
in VGA mode and install new drivers. TIP: If windows identifies
your card on boot but won't recognize the new drivers, choose
cancel. Then go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Display
Adapters. You will see Standard VGA adapter there. In its
properties menu, choose to reinstall drivers.
tips by experience in tech support so far:
* Voodoo 2
users benefit from GLsetup
* Voodoo 3 users benefit from WickedGL
* ATI Rage Pro users go to atitech.com
for further support
* StealthIII s540 users - be
aware that is a Savage 4 chipset. Get the latest Savage 4 drivers.
* Banshee users benefit most
from the latest drivers by 3DFX
If your system is locking up, check the driver versions and
compare the date to what you just downloaded for the update.
Also, make sure you have enough cooling -- Quake 3 really puts your
system to the test. Even the best cards can get hot with this
one. Don't forget about that handy tool they inccluded in
Windows 98 called System Information. Start Menu>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Information. Look it up! See what you've done.
If you're going to be the one to work on the machine, at least
know what is in there.
Gamestate" is another problem popping up and you sit
there forever and then leave the server and find you had a
999 ping when you look back in. Did you also notice you were
still listed? Basically awaiting gamestate as I understand it is the server is trying to "see" you. It is trying to accept you and your
connection and skin. If it can't quite connect with you, you sit and wait.
There are several suggestions, all of which are a crapshoot.
Works for some, not for others. I had an experience myself
with it where about 8 of us joined a server and all 8 of us
got stuck in Awaiting Gamestate. Some of us
exited the server and refreshed it to see our names still
listed on the server and all players had a 999 ping. Others
waited long enough that they were released from it and entered
the game. They then complained that the ping was not good
in the server. Could this perhaps be a server side bug? I'm not really sure. It can be from firewalls, routers, proxies or just plain old packet
loss. It's a mystery....
Client_Unknown_to_Auth Now please understand I can only guess here. I
present the evidence, you decide.
My experience with this has been for a couple of reasons. First one being that you are sharing a cdkey with someone on your network. Or trying to join a
server on your own network. The IP address has problems resolving.
The other reason may be disputed, but I have the feeling is about 80% accurate.
After the idmaster suffers a crash, it takes a while for it to "refresh" itself. Now not knowing exactly how the servers for authentication and
masters work, I can't give you techie terms here. But I believe that after that server has suffered a down-age, it has to rebuild it's database of dns and
therefore some of us are still left with our dns unable to be resolved. (Domain name server-for those interested) What that means is that people in
certain number groups will suffer this error. And it mysteriously clears itself up. I only say this because it has happened to me on 2
separate occasions. Once quite a few months ago and again this week.
A way around this problem is this: Connect to another server, hit escape then Leave
Arena. Now go to Mutliplayer>Internet>Specify and type in the IP and the port of the server you were unable to join. It will then join that
server just fine. For some reason, it previously could not connect you past the idmaster server. Once successfully connected to another server, you
can choose the server that failed by IP address.
Invalid cdkey This one is pretty straight forward. Your cdkey is not typed
correctly or is simply not yours. Buy the game or learn how to type! Seriously, make sure you put the cdkey in properly in the menu. If you
"borrowed" the game it was probably "lent" to 40 other people some of whom are also trying to play at teh same time and getting the
same message while ONE guy is actually playing. So BUY THE GAME you warez monkey!
server uses protocol X "X" being any number such as 45
or 48. That is the numbering system identifying the point releases. For example 45 is point release 1.17 and 48 is point release 1.27. At this time,
not all servers are running the same version. You will need to make a choice which version you want. They are not compatible.
version 4, expected 3 This means your point release installation was not
completed properly. Somehow was interrupted. Reinstall your point release.
