qbism super8 engine

06-25 UPDATE:  Just added a video to YouTube, 720p recorded directly within the engine:

Thanks to Madfox for great map.

qbismSuper8 is a jacked-up 8-bit software engine.  It uses the original glorious, crunchy palette of 256 colors without the original limitations, a surreal steampunk pixelated alternative to the ho-hum hyperreal.  Super8 is originally based on the heavily modified and updated Makaqu 1.3, itself based on tochris, with additional changes from many other sources.

The bad news is I’m on-the-road in a rural area during qexpo and using dial-up.

The good news is that I was able to upload a new “big map special” because the file size is much smaller than the previous release, from 60Mb to 2Mb.  Why?  The engine can now load typical 24-bit TGA skymaps and convert them on-the-fly.

Main engine features:

  • Plays most modern epic maps that require enhanced engine limits and extensions.
  • Physics and movement fixes for a smoother experience.
  • Cool effects like scorch marks, transparent water and particles, and skymaps.
  • High-resolution, automatically detects available modes.
  • Modernized to play nice with weird laptop screen resolutions and Windows XP/ Vista/ 7.
  • Record demos directly to xvid, mp4, divx, or other avi-compatible formats.
  • Handy console helpers like tab-completion of map names and commands.
  • Fisheye mode!
  • Engine code is highly portable… ported to Flash so far, soon the world.
