PQ Mailbag

We're Warmin' Up

Demonwench: Howdy howdy, y'all! Welcome to the wondermussness that is the PQ Mailbag! Woop! It's April now and the weather has definately finally begun to warm. I don't mind telling you I'm estatic about it! This week's Rants n' Raves was about female gamers and it seemed to touch a nerve here. We got a lot of responses from y'all. Here's a select few.

Pappy-R: While I still wait for spring to be sprung in my neck of the woods, let's just pop dat bag of reader goodness. These people had some stuff going on this week.

Sexist Gamers

Subject: sexist players

Hehe, now thats funny as heck,,,,sorry to hear that people actually have trouble with an issue like this online, well and off too. When i go online all i see is text, graphics, url's,,,and some time,,, familar names,,, I dont see and age ,race, sex or religon,,,even in gaming i always choose the force player option,,,so as not to be destracted by whats diferent,,,, clearly we all jump in there and play for entertainment so who cares who's who or whats what or even who wins , Fun is what always brings me back.

Demonwench: That's exactly what I've been tryin to say for a very long time! We play for FUN! Who cares who wins, loses, or takes it up the butt as long as we all have fun! Lose the 'tude, fellas, and enjoy yerself.

Pappy-R: I'd like to use a sentence with a comma or two here, but Ace took all the ones for this page. Other than that, I obviously agree. There are differences between the sexes (thank God!), but playing computer games isn't one of them.

Subject: Women gamers rants & raves

Is the issue really women gamers, or stupid gamers? I got into computers, and video games about a year and a half ago, the first gaming sites I found were the GSI planets. Upon seeing that PlanetQuake was run by a woman named Hellchick, my first reaction was "cool, a female gamer" Having been around a number of game sites a while now, I've come to realize; it's not such a big deal. The novelty I first felt has long since worn off.

When I've seen problems arise from a woman joining a game, or forum, or whatever, it's always been caused by some idiot who can't cope with the fact that a stick shift and ball bearings are not required hardware for gaming. I still recall the neanderthal who wrote into the PQ mailbag once on basically this same issue, and said something to the effect that "Women have no place playing these games." I wanted to yank the simpleton through the phone lines, and out of my monitor, so I could I could beat him into a paste like consistency (sorry, testosterone moment). I feel like these guys are not only dragging down the male gender, but also the entire gaming community with witless comments like that. I was recently reminded on the PQ forums of a Bugs Bunny line that fits for these guys: "would you like to shoot him now, or wait until you get home?"

Not too long ago, I read an article linked at Dogfighter.com (unfortunately the link no longer works or I'd post it for those interested), written by a female simmer. She has run into the same ignorant mentality in her preferred genre of gaming. She made the observation that it mostly comes from older men, and young teens. My thoughts on that are; there may be hope for the teenagers, that they'll grow out of. After all, it may just be their hormone addled minds (no offense to any teenagers out there, actually capable of coherent thoughts). I'm afraid with the older men, there is no option but to put them out of our misery, as they're set in their ways. Okay, so that's not an option.

Anyway, I'm trying to curtail my tendency to ramble. I'm also running out of descriptive terms for the brain donors that have inspired such articles as this Rants & Raves, so I'll just finish by saying this with my usual lack of eloquence: People, get over yourselves. Gaming skills have nothing to do with gender. Being beaten by a woman doesn't make you less of a man, it simply means she's a better fragger. Leaving the server out of fear of being beaten by a woman makes you, in my eyes, less of a person. Get over yer freakin' biases, and play the game!

Demonwench: Oh feel free to ramble. I luv it when people are right... Play the game and ignore everything else, good plan!

Pappy-R: He's done? Kool! Now what were we talking about again? Oh yeah...girls in gaming. I'm for it!

Subject: RnR - Female Gamers

I have to say I'm with Slof on this rant.. being a female computer techie, and a female quaker (the latter only for about a year) I've been subject to the 'you don't belong here' disease and plenty of namecalling. I also think that male-female mixes are better. If anyone wants to join an all-female clan for their own reasons, all the power to em. But don't try telling me that I _should_. I can hold my own with the guys, thank you. And to all those llamas out there who think that calling gurlies names because they nixed you makes you look good, talk is cheap, me buckos. Shut up and frag :>

Demonwench: More power to ya, sister! Frag those morons!

Pappy-R: It's all just fun. "Frag what moves" is a non-gender specific idea.

Subject: Female Gamers

I just don't understand why some guys would be upset at the thought of losing to a woman. "It really doesn't matter who hands you your ass" hits the nail right on the head. The server you just joined could be all females, nothing says you have to use a nickname based upon your sex. I think this type of behavior is exhibited in all types of events where men and women might compete. Some guys are just like that, and it makes me upset to be a part of that club.

Anyway....

I don't think the women should have separate competitions and the like. The answer is to get so many women playing that you can't get on a server without facing at least one female. Then let the boys that don't want to be fragged by a girl drop. We don't need them anyway. There is no reason why women should not be treated as equals in the gaming community. Hell, I watched a female lumberjacking competition yesterday, now there's a sport where women need their own comps. We don't rely on (much) physical prowess in our gaming activity. Hell, that's why most of us are involved :) It's time for the goobers who give women a hard time to shut up or get out. More women players = more servers, frags, and notoriety. It's all good....

Demonwench: Hey, I'm all about the notoriety... '-) Everybody grab yer guns and start blowin' stuff up!

Pappy-R: I can't wait for the ones that bug female fraggers to reach puberty. Then girls won't be "yuky".

God bless em! I was recently getting my skull passed to me on a platter, and when I found out it was a chick gamer, I thought that was just pretty darn cool. I've never seen anything wrong with having a woman whoop me around a bit and I would CERTAINLY rather have a few females mixed in with the stinky males at a LAN party.

On top of that, online gaming, as Slof mentioned, requires none of the attributes that set man and woman apart. There's really no need to have all-female clans or competitions unless the ladies themselves are calling for it. If the guys are too afraid to enjoy a feminine arse-beating, well, sorry boys, grow up and get over your insecurities. It's a game for God sake. There's very few things I don't enjoy more when it's enjoyed in the company of women. Nuff said!

Demonwench: I agree! Coed events are more fun than single sex ones! Everybody mixing, it's all good.

Pappy-R: Can't we all just get along...with guns.

Demonwench: Coming right up...more Mailbag goodness!

Next: Goodness, lots of it.
