PQ Mailbag

Yet more tomfoolery!

Well, with luck your week has been less active than mine. Finals are now over, broadband's about to go, and I've been fighting with the at the CIS department here. You see, their mail server decided that it wanted a break for the holidays as well. Either that, or the department is staffed entirely by drunken simians. In either case, it's been randomly discarding the majority of the mail I've received over the past week.

So that means it's another 2-pager for the mailbag this week, seeing as I've only received 4 days worth of mail. A pity, but you'll just have to make do with one less page of my inimitable style than you normally would. I know, life's a bitch sometimes, but it'll have to do. So let's get this thing started.

Feedback!

Of course, since this is another mini-mailbag I'll spend a bit of time promoting my mods as filler. So, see if you can be the first to find the hidden link in this mailbag to the Bazooka Quake 3 site. I'll give you a hint - I'm really bad at hiding things.

So this week, let's start with a bit of feedback to the last mailbag. It's always nice to know that someone reads this stuff. Strangely enough, a few people even seemed to like it. Just goes to show you never can tell.

From: Mitsukai Sanran
Subject: Another machinima contest....?

First off, you're a funny dude, a_madman. lol

Ok, to my questions. Is Planetquake going to have another "Machinima" contest? I mean, I know that nobody entered an' all, but I was "going" to but didn't get to finish in time. lol I'm sure there was SOMEONE else ... at least ONE, other than my bro and I working on entering the contest.

Welp, so there was just one question, but even if you don't have another contest, we've got some good ideas for some machinima's. And we'll be more prepared next time. (i think, hehe)

I know!! You could raise the stakes! 1st prize a GeForce 14 SUPER ULTRA! WOOT!

-Mitsukai Sanran

Well, this is almost feedback about the last mailbag, anyway. Right off the bat he tells me I'm funny, which is always a plus in my book. But then he starts going on about some other things that aren't me, and that's where he started to lose my interest.

Seriously though, Mitsukai, I can't say I've heard any rumors of new Machinima contests around here. The last one was, as you pointed out, a bit of a disappointment for everyone involved. However, we're always happy to have new stuff to watch around here, so don't let the lack of a contest stifle your creativity. In fact, to give you some incentive I'm going to go ahead and award you your GF14 Ultra Pro card. Look for it in the mail sometime in the next 4 to 7 years when they become commercially available.

From: "fantomas"
Subject: Annoying Advertisements

Since you went on about gettin spam in your email, it made me start thinking, but then I was rudely interrupted by a obnoxiously large Nascar AD that started moving around on my screen. After chasing it around and finally closing it, I had totally forgotten what I was thinking about. I think the banner advertisements plastered all over the page is fine, I totally understand those, but come on, pop-ups too? Most porn sites don't even use those bastardly demons anymore, so why would the best damn quake site in the world use them?

--F4nt0m45

Another semi-feedback here, but I'll go ahead and field this one to save the GameSpy marketing wonks a bit of time. Fortunately this mail has a few redeeming qualities, the "best damn quake site in the world" bit being foremost among them. So I'll go ahead and give it the straight answer.

Like our friend F4nt0m45 (that's the last time I'm typing THAT out) pointed out, banner ads are everywhere. They're just part of life on the net. However, we've been doing everything possible to save you from popups around here. I looked again after I got this mail, and I haven't found one on the site since the new "skyscraper" ads went up. Mad props to Pappy-R for that.

But for me, here, the biggest issue is consent. You go to a webpage, you can expect to see some way to pay the server bills. Spam mail, on the other hand, is intrusive. I've never asked for it, I've never been to the websites they promote, and I'm not interested in any of the services they provide. The only thing I've done is have an email address available on a well-known site. That, in my eyes, is unacceptable.

On a side note, though, banner-free porn? Amazing.
Damn, you must have a lot more experience looking than I do. ;)

Poll positions

Apparently my mention of the PQ Poll struck a chord with a few loyal readers. I wasn't kidding when I said "few," though. Still, it beats nothing at all.

From: Stephen "Abbo" Abbott
Subject: PQ poll

Hi,

I really enjoyed the good ol' PQ poll (hey... that rhymes - I think) of a while ago. Any chance of bringing it back for more voting laughter...?

Cheers,

From: "mattycnl"
Subject: ?poll?

Hi there "New Content Manager"! When is the poll going to be active again? Besides there's some kind of problem with the vote......try it yourself. Let's fix it guys, or I'm not going to wish you Merry Christmas........... (yeah yeah, who cares?)

Jeppa

I am currently aware of the poll's current status, i.e. "broken." At this point, the official date for the poll's revival is "when it's done." And no, you don't need to be a giant gaming company to use that line. I'm living proof.

I'm expecting it'll be finished sometime between early 2002 and the date when the sun implodes into a small, dark piece of coal. I'm not entirely sure when that will be - Hellchick was always the astrophysicist around here. Still, it'll hopefully closer to the former than the latter. Patience, my children, patience...

Next: a madman's homebrew tech support!
