Normally I don't post any of the fan-mail we get at PlanetQuake, but this was just too cool for words.

From : Ian Reid
Subject : ta

Just a note to record appreciation. This is a great site. I've loved all this stuff since Doom, and your site makes me love it more. Brilliant.

So, what's so special about that? Well, Ninewells Hospital in Dundee is where I was born! Obviously not in the Department of Psychiatry (or at least I hope not), but still... How cool is that?

Well, I thought it was even if you don't. Anyway, on with our regularly programmed schedule...

PatchWork

Another sack of mail about Quake II v3.19 and Zoid arrived on my desktop this week...

From : Dominator
Subject : Zoid

Zoid; the game legend we know as Zoid will be arriving near my home town very shortly, and the first thing i plan do is..
shake his hand?-Nadda
pray and go humble on him?-Not this happy quaker
punch him-most definetly

let me explain;
i feel that all these major "pains in the butt" bugs and annoying happenings in q2 gameplay online..is because of the Jerk so called Game God Zoid..the guy is an idoit, he screwed up everything with q2..well thats all

From : R.P.G.
Subject : Response to Karrde

This is in reponse to Karrde's message in the 9/26/98 mailbag, entitled "Crying about Q2 Patches." He said, "What they fail to see is the fact that Id is actually going beyond just making a game and being content with it. They are IMPROVING on something that you've already payed for."

Do you REALLY think that 3.15 was an improvement? Or 3.17, 3.18 (beta), or even 3.19? Granted, 3.17, 3.18 and 3.19 were improvements upon 3.15, but were any of these improvements upon the point release? No. Not at all. I'd downgrade to the point release if I could find it, and servers were running it.

Face it, these patches aren't improvements, they're not upgrades, they're just a new number with more features we don't want and need (i.e. air control variable). They're ruining their own game, while my $50 is turning to shit.

On the other hand...

From : Robert A. Seace
Subject : Zoid, Q2 patches, whiners, etc...

I agree completely with Kardde's message in your last Mailbag... I don't understand at all why so many people are whining so damned much about the Q2 patches... Would you seriously rather that id just ignored all the bugs, and said to hell with all the gamers playing it, and just stopped making any improvements??

No, of course, people would RATHER that the game was perfect right from the beginning, and that id had magically been able to somehow predict EXACTLY what everyone wanted right from the start, so it never needs to change at all...

But, people need to realize that this is reality, and shit like that doesn't happen... All software has bugs, and no software is perfect from the start... The difference with id is that THEY try to actually FIX those bugs, and change the software to make it better... How ANYONE can have a problem with that, I just don't understand...

Also, what REALLY pisses me off is to see people giving Zoid a hard time... I mean, Christ, this guy has done more for the Quake/Quake2 community than most people; certainly FAR more than these imputant, whining fucks writing in to complain about him...

He created CTF, arguably the best Quake/Quake2 mod in existence... He was largely responsible for much of QuakeWorld, arguably the best form of multi-player Internet Quake... He's responsible for all the various Unix ports, without which there would be FAR few servers for these whining putzes to play on...

And, from everything I've ever heard him say, he seems like a damn fine person... So, it really takes a LOT of fucking nerve for some witless little prick to insult him and call him incompetent... It boggles the mind... I, for one, think Zoid is doing a great job...

The ONLY complaint I have is the fact that the DLL source hasn't been released in so damned long... It really needs to be, and soon... But, I hardly think that's Zoid's fault...

From : Thanos
Subject : Q2 patches and Zoid

I'll keep this short and hopefully sweet. I can put up with everyone "debating" about all the patches being released for Q2, but I am DAMN sick of people badmouting Zoid. Memories are short, apparantly. This is the man that perfected that little thing called QuakeWorld, and brought us CTF2. I think with that kind of record, he's allowed to mess up now and again.

Personally I was happy with v3.14, and didn't see any need for autodownload, chasecams, air acceleration variables etc. And as far as I know the only bugs that have been fixed in the last couple of patches are the ones introduced by v3.15 and v3.17...

Anyway, all hail to id for continuing to support Quake II, but sometimes I just wish they'd fix the few remaining bugs and call it a day instead of adding in funky new features that create even more bugs. :-)

Oh, and while we're talking about Zoid, happy anniversary to him - his original Threewave CTF recently celebrated it's second year. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to CTFing into the new millenium...
